After some of our members returned from a sabbatical in Colorado, the Ozark Roadies gathered together on Saturday to do the "Savoy" ride. It's one of our staple rides. Generally, there's not much traffic, and the scenery is pretty nice.

The ride starts in the middle of the Greater Savoy Arkansas Metroplex as seen below.

We park in the graveled area in front of the community center and get ourselves and our bikes ready to go. Saturday's parking lot preparation included lotsa water and sunscreen.

About 200 or 300 hundred yards down the road, we cross Clear Creek. To the left up the creek a little way is this dam. It's always interested me.

Here's a closer view. It's as peaceful a place as you'd ever want to visit.

I've noticed what appears to be an old mill race to the left side of the dam and the creek.

After Saturday's ride, I ventured down to that area and found a local out watering and weeding her flower bed. "Excuse ma'am was there ever a mill here?"

Yes there was. It was a grist mill built in the late 1800's and operated until 1960. There was a 100-year flood in 1960, and the whole area was under about 4 feet of water. A month later, the mill burned. There was no water wheel. It was powered by a turbine. The mill provided power for the school house up the street, which is the community center, now.

The property has been in her family for quite a number of years. She's been a life-long resident of the area and attended school in the building in the first pic.

Actually, I took a number of these pics after the Saturday ride. I'm happy that I waited until after the ride as I would not have learned about the history of the area had I just stopped quickly and shot. I had always wondered if the community center had been a church. That it was a school house makes sense, now.

About a mile or so down the road, we cross the Illinois River.

Clear Creek is a tributary of the Illinois. Usually, the clarity of the water in the river is a little better than it appears in the pic. The river is a couple of feet deep right in this area.

I like the various wild flowers. These were growing to the side of the bridge several feet below the deck.

The actual color of the flowers is reflected by those in the left of the pic. I'm not much of a photographer and need to pay more attention to lighting.

I'm running out of space, and there's still a few miles left to go. See below.

Great story and beautiful scenery. For being "not much of a photographers", you took some very nice pics.

Thanks for sharing - looks like a nice ride. I like the river pic with the symmetry of the tress and the sunlight down the middle - don't know if you were going for that shot but it really pulls the eyes in.

OK, back on the road...

About a mile after we cross the river, we turn south onto Viney Grove Road passing farms, pastures, and on one recent ride a vociferous peacock with the lungs of a USMC drill instructor. He wasn't out on Saturday. Probably had better sense than to be out in the heat.

We pass the Viney Grove Methodist Church along the way. It's a very well kept building and probably like many of us here, 50+.

This is a side view as we ride past it on Viney Grove Road. I came back after Saturday's ride to get both a front and side view.

This is a shot of the view about 2 miles north of Prairie Grove Battlefield, our primary pit stop.

The mountains in the distance are the Boston Mountains south of Fayetteville.

This is the Roadies minus several who were off on vacation.

Left to right: Alan, Lou, doctor j, Rodger, Arkansasgal, and Cheri. I'm not too sure about Lou. In addition to cycling, he runs long distances. Why on earth would anyone do that when he has a nice CF bike? Arkansasgal is our esteemed, fearless, and feared founder and leader. She keeps the Roadies riding and keeps us in line. This pic was made at the Prairie Grove Battlefield. They have the facilities needed for rehydrating and dehydrating and a lot of shade.

This plaque describes the events that transpired on this site.

The Roadies rode 42 miles on Saturday with an average speed of about 15.1, and I might add that none of us had any trouble keeping warm.

On Saturday afternoon, the temperature was in the mid 90's.

After our return to Savoy, I decided to get my mileage for the day up to 50+. After a bit of our normal post-ride banter, I headed north out of Savoy. This is a view coming back into Savoy, about a mile north, and fortunately down hill.

As you can see, the traffic in and out of Savoy is frightful.

It was a good ride and a good time with the Roadies. No flats, and did I mention that none of us had any problem keeping warm?

Once again, doctor j comes up with killer pictures of a great ride. I especially like that tractor seat next to the waterfall...nice touch.

Doctor J -- thanks so much for the great pics and the history of the building where we meet for our rides. I have wondered if it might have been a school house. I'll be sure to tell the Roadies to check this thread when I send out the notice today for our ride this coming Saturday. Great job!

Having never seen the Greater Savoy Arkansas Metroplex in person, these pics are quite amazing! Good you picked a time when traffic wasn't snarling. Also looks like a fun group to hang with. :)

Great report. I am maneuvering to try to move closer to your area but must admit to being nervous about road riding in the Ozarks. I have seen too many cars and trucks roaring around blind curves on narrow roads with no shoulders to be completely nonchalant about it. I find these pictures most heartening and inspiring. I was actually at the Illinois river Monday, but on the Oklahoma side. This is my kind of country. But I must ask -- where were the hills? Would you have to ride all the way to the Bostons from Fayetteville to increase your verticality?

I don't blame you for being nervous about the narrow roads, no shoulders, blind curves etc. Our little group is reasonably choosy about routes. Some of the roads we ride have the curves, hills, and no shoulders but the traffic is fairly sparse and not all that fast moving.

The major hills start to increase south of Fayetteville and Prairie Grove. As I understand it, a popular local ride is in the area south and east of Prairie Grove. I've not done that ride yet, and if the Roadies have done it, it was before I started riding with them. I suppose I'll have to drive it once to get a feel for it.
