Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - How do you ride your fixie...

I really like simple things. Single speeds and fixies definitely fit that. I saw this YouTube video and now I'm not sure:

Is this what most people do with fixies? "Fixie trixx"? Or is it just one of those silly subcultures? If this is really what they're for, then I might be changing my mind.

i do no handed barspin skids. i get mad propz from all the bums around me.

I ride my bikes back and forth to my volunteer job, and to the grocery store.
I am also in the process of setting up one of my SS bikes as a time trial bike.
We have a few of those fixie-kids here, they mostly ride around crashing alot, and pushing their over-geared bike up hills.

I ride like the guy in the video, except I scream and fall.

If youre already convinced you dont want any part of anything with a subculture, you will become a hermit and retire in a blue corduroy recliner watching "Brooke Hogan Knows Best" (god I love that show). Just get a god damned fixed gear bike and ride it for fun or exercise or commuting or whatever your heart desires (not yelling at you, just yelling haha)! If youre concerned with subcultures, DONT BE. There is such a diverse group of fixed gear riders out there. I promise you, you will find a few people (closer than you know) that will make fun of 'trixx on fickseas' jut as much as you do.

I ride to friends homes, in downtown, to the bar, to the corner store, to the water, to Ft.McHenry for patriotic inspiration, in backward circles, trackstand, skid, etc..

You should figure out what YOU like to do on a fixed gear bicycle regardless of what others are doing.

I ride my "fixie" with water bottles, a cyclocomputer, pursuit bars, and a bag. I do 60-100 mile rides once/twice a week and (in the fall) commute 35 miles 4x a week. I've got better things to do than sick barspinz.

Would you stop driving your car just because you saw a crash durby? NO! Most things in life have some sort of sub-culture. Get over it and get a "fixie" (hate that word) if you want one. You might enjoy it.

There are multiple sub cultures within Fixed Gear like the tricksters, hipsters, commuters, messengers, track racers, etc... that's what makes it so great. What other people are doing on them shouldn't really matter. Personally I ride mine for fun, no tricks or skidding and I'm getting more into track racing. If you want to ride fixed then just ride it. Do your own thing.

Ok, here's a non-childish response.

Whenever I go for long rides out of the city, or to tour, I use my Surly Long Haul Trucker, because it is geared and it's generally a comfortable ride.

I work from home, so I don't commute, but if I would, I'd use my fixed bike. I use my FG on weeknight rides (30 to 50km depending) going up once or twice Mont-Royal, which is a relatively small mountain, but very nice (it's a park designed by Lord Olmstead, the guy who did Central Park in NYC). I like going on top of the mountain to watch the tourists watch the city.

I also use it to visit friends or to run errands. If I go to farmer's market, I use my Surly because it has racks on it and my fixed doesn't.

On tuesday nights, I sometimes meet with the local FG crowd and we go for rides (none of my friends ride a bike, so that's nice).

Sometimes, when I just want relax, I like to just go down the street to the park by the river and practice very basic tricks like track stands or going backwards, although I'm not very good at that. Maybe I'm trying to be cool, or maybe I'm following a fad, but one thing is sure, I have a lot of fun doing it.

On the spectrum of cycling sub-cultures, you have BMX-metalhead at one end and uber-roadie time trialist at the other.

But the spectrum eventually runs a full circle. When the two ends eventually meet, everyone is riding a fixed gear.
