Triathlon - Passing motor vehicles on bike stage

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

On a couple occasions, I've been held up on the bike stage behind some hapless motorist on some highly necessary early Saturday AM trip. Sucks because:

* I'm going slower
* I'm afraid of a DQ due to drafting the car
* I'm afraid of a DQ due to crossing the median if I pass the car
* The USAT guy didn't say anything about this before the start

What are we supposed to do in this situation, which can go on for miles and miles?

1. Be safe at all times
2. At your next race, ask the director how to handle it, to avoid DQ
3. Be safe at all times

Thanks for the advice. Since I can't seem to find reference to this situation in any rules anywhere, I think I'll just stick with Be Safe. Hate to be paranoid but it seems like there may be a little bit of a Don't Ask Don't Tell thing going on here.

When you ask, make sure you do it in front of the crowd before the race. That way, everyone knows what the rules of the day are.

I never though of that...perhaps, I will ask on my next race...but I DEFINITELY AGREE WITH THE STAY SAFE PRINCIPLE
