Wear your helmut!!!
Just bought a Trek 5200 in October and have been putting in some good mileage between storms since I picked her up, getting ready for a great spring. Last Saturday I took the mtb out because it had been raining and I wanted to get some miles in. So on my way down to the American River, I took a corner I've taken many times and this time my front wheel slid out. I knew what was coming ... nothing I could do, just did't expect to actually get hurt. Needless to say, I landed hard on my right shoulder followed by the head 'snap' into the concrete trail. After expelling all of the air in my lungs, I started to take inventory and was concerned about my head. Soon I realized I felt pretty good and was very thankfull I had my helmut on. I tried to sit up and felt grinding and a sharp pain in my right shoulder... reached up and felt a large bump where my collar bone used to be smooth. I tried to get up and the pain was a little too much.
I reached for my phone in my jersey pocket and called my wife ..."I need you to come pick me up".... Again, I was verry glad to have my phone along with my helmut. Three days and many vicadon later, I saw the orthopedic surgeon who said it should heal nicely but it will be painfull and I won't be able to bear much weight on it for a couple of months. I informed that 2 months of recovery sucked and he let me know the guy he saw before me was going to require surgury ta realign his collar bone. I said thank you very much and scheduled my followup appointment.
I am now a true helmut advocate. Oh by the way, my helmut split from the earlobe to near the top of helmut. Best $50 I ever spent.
