Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Good looking black wheels that aren't Deep-V's

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hai guyz.

I'm gonna go pick up a pista concept later today, and plan to order a new wheelset to go with it. Sadly the only real thing that comes to mind is the Deep-V. I like the deep look of them but for one, everyone has them, and they sort of do make the concept look like a toy.

What else is out there in terms of quality, strong, good looking black rims?

Right now I have some shatty salsa delgado wheels, machined, but they are old and tired and I'd like to do this concept up proper.

mavic ellipse.

http://www.real-retail.com/via/parts/wheel/mavic/p092_02.jpg

not the lightest, but lighter than deep v, smooth hubs, bladed spokes and strong. i don't crit race and am not 200 pounds, so i cant speak in the way of stiff or not. they come with a mavic lockring, which works perfectly with eai cogs.

Does that mean it'll have a top tube pad along with a top tube brake lever held on with velcro?

Non machined black Aeroheads.

Any hard anodized box rim.

Ellipses.

Any of those would be sweet.

+1 for ellipses. Although "everyone" has those too. And "everyone" has pista concepts.

so much hate on the deep v's

a wheels a wheel, a bikes a bike.

f-it if you think everyone has them, do what you want, you are putting it on a concept....so yeah, thats like the honda civic with the twin turbo's that every kid wanted in high school anyways in bling factor alone, but just in bike form.

Wow those ellipses look sweet..
But I'm for the box section rim. Ambrosio FTW :)

But then again on a Pista Concept you might want to go with something "cooler".
Bladed and Aero.. I've got no suggestions.
But I thought about getting the velocity aero heads.
They seem nicer compared to the deep-v's.

The Velocity Aero's come in different colors, and they aren't deep v's. I heard Benscycle has them, but they aren't on the site.

what about velocity fusions, much less deep than the deep vs, but still have a bit of a profile..i like mine

Fusions are fine. I still ride my front Fusion, my rear died 6 months after being hit by a car which left zero damage to the bike but put my wheel out of true by 5 or 6mm or so.

I've got a set of Alex R-450 Aero rims laced to Formula TH50:51 hubs in black with black spokes & silver nipples. I weight 255lbs & they are holding up very nicely riding throught the potholes & curbs of NYC.
Got then at Ben's Vendio store for $99 for the set.

You will need rim tape & a cog but they come with a Formula lockring & (mine were) hand built. The stickers just peel right off.

Dude. We picked up a pair for my friends conversion for $75 and it came with a cog and lock ring, hand built at Bens Cycle.

Good to hear they hold up though[the girl it's for is like 110 lb.], they're NOT a bad pair of wheels by any means, especially for the price. But I think he's looking for something a little higher end.

2008 Vuelta Track Team (http://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_STOR20.cgi?Action=Details&ProdID=1148). Granted they're *kinda* V-ish, but they are inexpensive, smooth as silk, and seem to be durable as hell.

are these (http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=188_332&products_id=5232&zenid=b3a846aab3f23f5f618cf307eff324f8) any good? I kind of want all black wheels, and since I'm a big guy I like the idea of 36 spokes, at least on the rear wheel.

I guess i'd prefer something similar to that, but with fixed/free on the rear instead of fixed/fixed. any suggestions?

I was checking those out.. Maybe I'm unaware of something, but I think the price is misprinted.. the MSRP is $599

Yeah, but they're selling them for $169. *shrug* Maybe it's like a Bikes Direct MSRP. :)

I think it's like a dummy price. So you feel like you're really saving a buttload of money. I'm not sure if there has to legally be any truth behind it or not, so long as they sell them for the advertised price. If they arrive at my door and aren't all twisted to ****, I'd be stoked.

I dont know.... it's bens cycle, I doubt they'd try to pull that off. They're not starved for business and they're a reputable shop.

Yea I'm having the same feeling too. I think I'll go for the bike island ones since they seem to be lighter and with more spokes it'll probably handle more abuse.

I'm planning on the black. as lame as it is i plan on going white frame black components with a hint of silver here and there. I would love some color but that just jacks up the price for the goods i want, and seeing how i ride a windsor the price isn't justified. nice bike though.

I second the velocity fusions. I built my first set of wheels with these, they're great. Have one on the front of my other bike in silver, tough looking rims, not as obnoxious as V's.

These are a lot nicer than deep V's, but they're pretty pricey.

Something I noticed: track wheels are always more expensive and heavier than road wheels.

Something I did was I took my Mavic Ellipses (I'm 210 lbs and they are always true, never any problems) and replaced the front Ellipse with a lighter Mavic Kysyrium Elite. Its a black road wheel that weighs 770grams instead of 1000 grams of the Ellipse. You don't need a track front wheel. My 2 mavic wheels of different types match up fine. Bonus: i get a brake surface up front, too. Both are bladed and have the decals removed. My wheelset is light and tough as *****. Get a rear Ellipse from bikeman and a front Kysrium anywhere.
