Actually, we have ulterior motives for the trip. It's the same weekend as the John Ascuaga's Nugget Best of the West Rib cookoff. :D If it weren't for that the Fiance and I both would be at the ride.

Ribs? Cookoff?!?!

I'm with going with you - This Ride Has Been Cancelled. :D

THANK YOU FOR YOUR POST

I miss that cook off every year, although I thought it was much later like in Oct. Ever since I saw it on Food Network, I've been wanting to go.

melissam & I are making tentative plans to go up to Healdsburg for a 200K brevet that day.

If that falls through, though, I'll bring me & my vintage Riv.

(Mel has a Ti Merlin - would she be allowed? :) )

So......

I'm thinking about this ride some more, and recalling Alan's après-ride party I thought we could possibly do the same here (if there is any interest). I figure if we shove off at about 8am, we'd probably be back to the parking lot by 1pm. I live about 8-10 miles straight north up the 680, and have a house with (small)pool and BBQ.

I was thinking nothing fancy - maybe just fire up the Weber for dogs and burgers, and those wanting a dip in the water would be more than welcome to. You hippie-types can even bring your guitars, and we can re-enact that famous scene from Animal House. :)

Interested?

Sorry, already made plans to visit a friend in San Ramon after the ride. But bbq sounds mighty tempting, I'll see how pissed she'll be if I'm a little later then planned and let you know.

So far - still 7:30. While it's subject to change due to popular opinion, I'd rather start earlier than later....

I'm not sure if I will be able to attend but if I do I am interested in carpooling. As the handle indicates I live in Davis.

I don't have a classic steel bike, closest thing I've got it titanium DF bike. Certainly closer to classic steel than the aluminum recumbent.

Yes, I'm interested in carpooling. Meeting in Davis would be on the way for all three of us...

I've got an Acura RSX that can fit two bikes and two people nicely. If Craig can't make it, and no one else is joining us, I'd be happy to drive. If it's more than two, my car isn't the best.

Looks like my wife might be able to go. Depends on whether or not we find someone to watch the kids. If she does, we'll just drive out ourselves. Though if someone doesn't mind sitting in the back seat of my pickup, there's room for one more.

so the weekend of the 30th appears to have magically cleared up on my schedule. I may be able to (finally!) make it to a BF ride!

There's probably some steel in my pedals somewhere, does that count? :D

I'd be BARTing as well, so a slightly later start would be fine with me.

I'm in... My wife is out of town that weekend, so I'm free (but not easy!) to join in on the fun.

My steel bike is in pieces in the middle of a really slow rebuilding project, so its aloo-minium with a side order of carbon fiber for my ride. But if someone is a glutton for retro-punishment, I could lend a pair of classic campy pedals with toe-clips and straps!

Steel/Vintage..? 45 mi...? no-drop..? - BBM is reading my mind.

I'm in, and will bring my "new" old Melton.

t4mv - OK, I'm hoping to see your Melton!

bikingshearer - One vote for the Paramount. It's what my Varsity wants to be when it grows up.

BBM - I'd be in for grilling a sausage or two if adequate interest warrants lighting the coals/gas - Thanks!

I'm in, even if it really does start at 7:30 am.

And I'll even stand by my offer to ride sweep. Like I said, I'll be back there anyway . . . .

And yes, I'll be up for some grub at Chez Bigbossman apres ride. My SO, Valerie, is even interested in joining us for the eating part. (The riding part: not so much . . . yet.)

Since that is Labor Day weekend, two events to be aware of.

(1) The Scottish Games will be happening at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. That will mean extra traffic on Bernal Ave and Pleasanton Ave. Shouldn't be much of an issue for the ride itself, but it may be one for getting to and from the meeting spot.

(2) The Annual Livermore Valley Wine Festival. This is another very good reason to get an early start so as to avoid what can be significant additional traffic on Tesla Road, and possibly Livermore Ave, Concannon Ave and Vineyard Ave. Fortunately, the area most likely to be impacted has the widest shoulders of pretty much the entire ride. For years, the Valley Spokesmen ran the late, lamented Hekaton Classic century down Tesla Road and Vineyard Ave (more or less exactly the opposite of the outward leg of BBM's route), and I can state from experience that if you pay attention everything should be fine. But it is something to be aware of.

Sadly, My Hekaton T-shirts have all been relegated to the ragbin... I did that ride a bunch of times.

I think this may have been the last one... 1992

The Hekaton went on at least a few more years, as I rode it several times up to '97 or '98, give or take, once on a tandem. The main 100mi ride kept that same route, though.

I still have memories of some unpleasant headwinds coming back from Livermore to Dublin in the afternoon. I was never so popular on a bike as I was captaining a tandem into those headwinds, with about a gazillion singles hanging on (out of the wind) for dear life.

Move me to the extremely highly likely list and add MyLilPony.

I'm trying to get my steel bike going. It's up, except I am undecieded on pedals. I have toe clips and straps now. I'm considering having teh french threads re-tapped, and adding clipless, but I really am too cheap....

Whoever organizes the ride gets to call the start time. The rest of us have to understand that you can't please everybody.

Hope you can make it.

I'm ok with driving myself but would be happy to carpool both ways. Thanks though.

My point was that if others were having a hard time getting to Pleasanton at 7:30, I would be happy to not wake up at 5:30am. But if the start time is 7:30, I'm good with that.

Is there an easy way to modify the route to pick up the folks at the BART station at the time they would come in? Leave our cars at the meeting place, then start the ride by heading over to the BART station? Or is that a dumb idea?

hey Pete! The earliest train is scheduled to leave Civic Center at 6:04 and get to Pleasanton at 6:52. That should be plenty of time to make the start. The next train leaves Civic Center at 6:24 and arrives in Pleasanton at 7:12, which is probably still doable as long as we hustle and don't get lost. I'm going to shoot for the 6:52 train, but I'm willing to wait for the 7:12 folks too.

Now wait a minute. I never said I wouldn't get up in time to get there that early. I also never said that I preferred bucking headwinds to getting up early. All I said was that it's a gawd-awful early time to be rousing oneself from the cozy confines of a nice, comfy bed - and I stand by that statement. So there.

Having said that, I got my sorry backside up early enough to make two rides out of Davis, and I'll get my sorry backside up early enough to be there for this extravaganza, assuming I don't hurt myself in the meantime. Hey, someone has to make bigbossman look good by comparison . . . . :innocent:

And after about mile 5, there is no way in aitch-ee-double-hockey-sticks that I'll be going fast enough for the Dynamic Duo, with or without dogs, to be pulling me, so don't give me none o' that self-righteous barnyard stuff, RR. :D
