Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Chainring Bashguards

How necessary are these? Are they helpful in preventing, um, bashing? What is the benefit? I was told by ex-boyfriend I should get one, but I don't think he really knows what he's talking about - but, if he's right, good for him, maybe I should then. Google tells me they can be $$$. Holla.

you could PM "prolly" about this -- he was testing out some prototypes from Milwaukee Bicycle Company or something.

You don't need one unless you're doing tricks and worrying about your chain eating your leg/pants.

I've been using one the past few months after cross season. Not a bad thing looks a bit different ... dresses up the 105 crank a bit.

thanks for the goods - i do take care to keep my pants/laces/body parts out of the way and i only turn tricks on my bike - don't actually do any tricks. yeah, he suggested a bash guard - dunno. he mentioned something about it helping to keep the chain clean (?). bike chain, of course.

When when I had the OG crusher [full ring guard], I still rolled my jeans up.

My Fisher Triton came with one. It was useless and I thought it looked stupid so I took it off.

The only reason why you'd want a bash guard on your bike is if your riding up 15" high curbs or smashing your chain ring on things.

Maybe you're Ex just wants an excuse to see you again to install it :)

it's for grinding....and u don't need it all the way around because in theory u are bunny hopping at the same leg position everytime.

topical but random, i just rode up a 15" curb, and as expected the cheap**** plastic bashguard that came with the bike merely broke off, leaving my big ring to be the bashguard. it worked, but I wasnt amused at the resulting chaos.

awkward, but I guess its a good time to ask, whats an ideal bashguard, one that mounts on the crank like a chainring..? is there a better thread for this? (and i know it was a dumb idea cuz its plastic, but usually i exercise good form :D)
