Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Deore XT spindle for a peugeot a road bike conversion?

I have an old Peugeot UO8 with thin-walled french cups in the bottom bracket. I've been wanting to replace the old cottered cranks and double chainring for a long time now. According to Sheldon's page, http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html, a 5-series spindle works with the thin-walled cups. The 5-series spindles are designed for a 70mm italian bottom bracket shell.
Well, I found a shimano deore xt spindle, 117.5mm in total length, designed for a 70mm shell. I assume this spindle will have the appropriate spacing between the bearing races since it is designed for a 70mm shell.
QUESTION: Whether the Deore XT spindles can be used with regular road cranks (normal square taper)? Anything special about them? Is the spindle the same diameter as a standard road spindle (i.e., the 3 and 5-series listed on Sheldon's page)? Anyone foresee any problems with using the deore spindle?
i have a peugeot uo-8 with the stock thin cups as well. if the deore spindle is a normal square taper, then i dont see any problems using it. im using a set of sugino cranks with the spindle and found 110mm to be a good size. i bought a 115, but it gave me a terrible chainline. so i would think if you use a single chainring, a 117mm would give you a pretty bad chainline.
what kind of cranks are you going to use?

I hadn't even thought about the cranks yet... I was thinking maybe using a single ring of an old shimano 105 set I have lying around. Are you using a track wheelset?
i have a mavic ma-40 rear wheel with a fixed/fixed hub that i got on craigslist for 50 bucks. and i got a cheap alex rim for my front wheel. if you are going to use a single ring, the 117mm bottom bracket might be a bit too long. as for a crankset, i used sugino xd from ebay. i had a specialized 109mm bottom bracket and i ran into issues. i also tried a sugino 115mm spindle was a bit too long and offset the chain by 2-3mm. i had to put the chainring on the inside of the crankarm spider. i had to mod the nondrive crankarm for my 109mm to work well. (109mm is what i am using now). so i would think a 110-113 would be perfect.
also...this was my first fixed gear build...and pretty much first bike i ever worked on. so i was learning while i was building.
