Forum Suggestions & User Assistance - What the HELL is with this AdBot thing in all the posts?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Do we have to put up with advertising EVERYWHERE now? Sheesh!

yea, it used to just be at the bottom of the screen, and only for lurkers. I don't like it too much. It doesn't show for donating members.

It doesn't show for donating members.
Donating members keep the forum going for everyone.
Why not become one? You get a really nice red star. :)

Nothing is free pal. Help Joe with hardware and hosting expenses with a donation and you will no longer see those pop up ads.

Remain a non contributing member and deal with ads. From what I understand the ads here are kept in good taste and not very intrusive anyway.

I'll take off the good ad's when donations regularly cover the cost of hosting ($350 / month)... I doubt that will ever happen ;)

Are you seeing this after every post? Or just after the 2nd post in each thread?

After the second post. Give more info about donating.

Aww come on Joe. If they can put up with me then a little ad every now and then ain't gonna hurt nothin.

That reminds me, I think its time to send in a little bribe so you will let me remain a member ;)

Actually, I just didn't know about the donation process.

I don't mid subscribing to a good forum and paying a fee. It's just that I have not encountered this type of advertising in any of my other forums.

I will gladly donate if that is required to keep this forum up and running and AD free.

Thanks for the info.

$350 a month for hosting this site???? That sure is expensive. Who is your web host? If you ever do switch hosting packages, consider this:

http://iquz.com/resellers.htm

Baswically, unlimited bandwidth and storage for $60 a month.

gwhunt, the server I am on is a P4 2.4 w/ 1 gig of ram. Server load is from 0.4 to 1.2 depending on the time of day.

Bandwidth? About 3 gig a day.
Database size with one week of backups? 7+ gig

Plus, I host a few other sites on the server, including kenkifer.com ... tack on another 50 gig a month in bandwidth that domain. :)

I have heard of very few hosts which actaully deliver unlimited bandwidth and storage reliably and last more than a few months. When you give them gigs of data and 100s of gigs a month of bandwidth they wont like you very much.

Thanks for the great site Joe. I dont think the banners are too annoying. Do you get paid per click on the banners or just for the banners being here? I will try yo donate in a bit here when I get more money. I just spent it all on a new bike.

bg4533. good point on the bandwidth comment. Even at wholesale rates of $.60 per gig, I am looking at a $84 / month bill. That doesn't include the rest of the service, or an room for profit. $60 per month for a site like this is just wishful thinking.

As for the ads, it is paid per click. But don't click just to make me a few cents! I don't want the advertisers to stop using adsense as a way to promote there site, due to fraudulent clicks.

Actually, I wanted to order a Bike Friday. Does the Bike Friday show up on your site? If it does, I'll use your site to order through.

The first few times I saw the ad-bot I thought it was just a member with the google G as an aviatar. I finally noticed that it never posted anything. Guess I'm a little slow .
Anyway, it is cool how it posts advertisements relevant to the thread.
