Mountain Biking - 29er wheel recommendations - must accept disc brakes

Subject says it.

I just bought a KHS Solo-one - and am upgrading to disc brakes. Only the front wheel accepts discs. I weigh in a 250# and pump pretty hard uphill. I spent most of my budget on the bike and discs - so any words of wisdom/recomendations you have would be great!

How much are you willing to spend?

For something cheaper than I9, virtually any shop can build up a standard disc hub [Deore or better] to a wide 700C rim [Salsa Delgado or a wide touring rim or whatever]. If you're worried about strength, go to 36h.

The shop tells me that he can get rear wheel for $50 - but I didn't think about asking him details...I will just do that when I pick up the bike.

I THINK my budget will be in the 100 range. If two wheels - $200. Somewhere in that ballpark.

I am also willing to try building my own wheel (pretty hands-on with other things - this would be my first wheel).

I would get a rear wheel built with a 36hole surly 1x1 disc hub. The flanges are waay wide and will give you a really strong wheel. Sun Rynolite rims or delgado rim. heavy duty spokes, 3x pattern.


Leave the front wheel alone, you aren't going to produce much of an upgrade with this budget anyway.

That's the information I was looking for.

Perfect. I will look for those wheels (that wheel) -- any suggestions as to where to look?

UPDATE:
Picked up the bike today as well as the disc brake set.

I need a rear hub that is single speed; disc; and 36 spoke.

I have searched around - and the only ones I can find are waaay out of my current budget ($30-50) after the bike purchase. I am going to keep the stock rims (they are Alex rims - and not too bad to build up).

My LBS will help me build the rim - but does anyone have a suggestion for wheel building information?

buy the parts through the lbs and let them build the wheel for you.
