Hello all,
Ive been offered a Dawes Super Galaxy tourer at a very good price it is 2002 model with full XT group and Mavic t221 rims, DT spokes, ritchey stem etc.
I plan to cycle from Alaska to Argentina, does anyone know if it will be up to the job, it is meant to have a near legendary rep. in EUrope.
Also it has conti top touring tyres, these are ok but a little thin for the roads i will have to ride on, Do you think that t5he 700c Marathon XR tyres in largest width poss will do for the roads in S. AM, what about getting replacements out that way.
Thanks in Advance all

The Dawes SG certainly has a solid rep and I would think it'd be up to the task.

One thing to consider though is your route-particularly once you hit So. America... this is where a Dawes Sardar (or equal) might suit your needs a pinch better because of road conditions and tire/tube availability.

However, swapping over to the Mara XR's would probably see you through with little to no problems... one thing though-once you start out on the XR's in their widest size: expect and prepare yourself to be dog-slow. They are real pigs in their rolling resistance. Also, you may not have enough fender clearance with wider sizes so check first or prepare to pull your fenders off.

Hi'ya,

I managed to cross Canada last year on a 'Galaxy' & the bike held up to alot of punishment. I used a fair few gravel roads & a 30 Km section of unfinished road. I doubt you will have a problem.

Its Iceland next, yet more unpaved roads.

All the best

Micc

With the exception of stretches in Mexico, Nicaragua/El Salvador, and part of the high Andes valleys in Peru, I think almost any bicycle would be able to handle the Pan Am highway.

Keep in mind in some areas there is not "A" Pan Am highway, there is a Pan AM system, and you will have some choices. In other areas, such as the Peruvian coast (Which is what I took for vast stretches) the quality of thehighway matches anything the US would offer.

Fun trip!
