Introductions - Hello from Ohio
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

After 15 years (and adding close to 7 pounds a year) of hardly biking at all from doing a century or two a year in my younger days, I'm trying to get motivated to ride again. My first goal is to be able commute to work (9 miles each way) by the end of this year.
Here I go . . .

GOOD LUCK, DAVE. I'VE BEEN CAR FREE FOR OVER A YEAR NOW AND LOVIN' IT. YOU MAY WANT TO BRUSH UP ON SOME ROAD RULES AND MAYBE BIKE YOUR ROUTE TO WORK ON THE WEEKEND. THIS WILL HELP YOU TO FIND PROBLEM AREA, ie: BAD CROSSINGS/MISSING MANHOLE COVERS/AREAS THAT MAY BE BLIND SPOTS FOR YOU OR AUTOS. THIS WAY WHEN YOU DO START YOUR FIRST RIDE TO WORK, THERE WILL BE FEWER SUPPRIZES.

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep that in mind as I say it's 9 miles each way that's by car, and I know I don't want to be on some of these roads on a bike! So part of my journey will be to find a safe, and relatively direct, route to take.
Just signig up here motivated me enough to dust off the bike (and pump the tires and adjust and tighten everything and lube everything, etc.) and take my first ride. Not far, but it's gotta start somewhere.
I see from browsing the site I'm a Clydesdale, hopefully that won't be forever, but I have a long way to go . . .

To try something different, I've started a blog at: http://daveo645.wordpress.com/ I see a few other folks have done similar things. I've kept logs/journals of my rides before, but maybe keeping it public will continue to motivate me . . .

I use http://www.gmap-pedometer.com to find & measure different paths for biking. If you press the Topo button, it overlays a topographic map so you can see where the hills/valleys are.

Hi Dave, the one really important thing is something you haven't mentioned here. What bike are you riding?
Welcome to BF, and feel free to PM me with any questions :) !

Well, after 1200 miles, including 7 commutes, lifting and using the Nordic Trac during the cold months - and of course eating moderate portions, I've dropped over 135 pounds and have rekindled my love of biking.
You can read the day-by-day progress starting with my first ride of 1.3 miles here:
Ride hard . . .
