Southern California - Highway/Sheriff Patrol in Angeles Crest

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Did the short ride up to Mnt. Wilson with my brother Sunday and noticed the heaviest highway patrol pressence ever. I think we counted about 6 CHP maybe 1 or two sheriff and a Sheriff helicopter. First patrol was near the gas station at the base. Second one was just past the first ranger station. I saw murdercycles pulled over just passed Clear Creek, assuming getting speeding tickets. Patrol car tucked in watching motorvehicles go buy and driving around. A motocycle CHP hidden under a tree on Mnt. Wilson road 20 feet past the Red Box parking lot. I said "good morning" to him. He said "just doing what we can". It took me a few seconds to yell back 20 feet after passing with "We appreciate that!".
So this looked like a major crack down on the bad apples in the motorcycling community. I guessing something really bad has happened more than just the weekend racer going down and killing himself. I tried search the net to find something out but nothing obvious came up. Any body else notice all this too, and know what's triggered this heavy law enforcement response?

Trying to meet the quota for the # of tickets handed out for the month of July? :D
I don't go up there that often anymore but I still see that type of patrol every once in a while.

Mt. Wilson = short ride? I understand it's only 20 miles from the 210, but short ride?

Sorry, time wise it's short, from the base on a good day 1.5 hrs or a bad day 1hr 45mins. I would call that short unless its super windy. most of the time just 1hr 35mins.

Hey O. I rode up to Mt. Wilson Saturday, 7/26, at noon. I saw only one motor-Sheriff the whole ride. To me, it is a small relief when I see them, my thought process being: more Sheriffs=fewer buzzes by motorcyclists.
On a good day, I'm still at around 2 hours from the (now closed) Shell at the bottom to the stop sign at the top of Wilson. Saturday was a hot ascent. I stopped at Red Box, got a soda, and sat in the shade for five minutes. The cool breeze on Mt. W Toll Road helped me out quite a bit.

The enforcement comes and goes, depending on a lot of factors. Sunday is a bigger day for motorcycles than Saturday. There are always lots of m/c crashes up there, and cars too. Most of the m/c riders are pretty cool to us.

Hey buddy! good to hear your going up their. I thought about you Sunday...I've been doing quite a bit of climbing on my mountain race bike, getting used to some new wheels and setup in preperation for a couple of races, but been up Angeles Crest from the Big T side mostly.
2 hrs is a very good time. I'm sure your time will start dropping. You must've gone later in the day when it got hot. Mnt Wilsom road is always a treat, nice shading ride, once you get to Red Box your home free.
We had perfect whether for Sunday starting at 8. Was just really surprised to see so many patrols and a helicopter. We'll have to meet up again. I'll check back with ya...

90 min. is pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty good. I never start at 8am, usually hit the lower gate 'round 11. Yeah, that's it.

I've noticed a little more presence from them in the last couple of weeks.
