Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - tires

My gatorskins have failed me, one of the spikey things from trees was on the floor and bam, it struck my tire and i got a flat...

a liner? if by that you mean rim tape then yes you need it so your spokes dont puncture the tubes. i know a lot of people that swear by soma everwears for a durable reasonable priced tire. i blew out a sidewall in like a week on one though. right now i have a maxis refuse tire on the rear and vittoria rubino front. never had a problem with a rubino, i wear out a rear tire every 4-5 weeks regardless of what it is.

I would either buy a more puncture-resistant tire like the Continental Gatorskin or keep what you have and buy a tire liner. If you go with both, the increase in rotational weight will really bog you down.

I ::knock on wood:: haven't yet gotten a flat since replacing my rear tire with a Specialized Armadillo. And yes, as others said, certainly use rim tape.

I don't believe that he is talking about rim tape, but, rather, a tire liner. Slime and a few other companies sell puncture-resistant strips that you put between your tube and tire to decrease the likelihood of a flat.

ah, good point -- and your advice on it makes sense, doing both (heavy duty tires & liner) seems pretty heavy.

so what you guys are saying is that it's better off for me to just buy some very durable tires like some continental gatorskins or soma everwears right?

Also, since i want some colored tires, what are some good & strong colored tires?

You can skid on any tires. It just depends on how much you're willing to pay for a replacement. If you're going to do hipster tricks, go buy a cheap tire and wreck that.

I have these tires as well. And I have NEVER had a flat, I have rode over broken glass many times too (not on purpose, but broken bottles on the street are pretty common in Brooklyn).

skidding is easy and i would hardly say its a trick. More of a waste of tire in my opinion. I skip stop occasionally to slow down but as long as you arent an idiot and keep control of your bike you shouldnt go through those tires for a long while. My gatorskins have been on for 3 months and currently show little to no wear at all.

This man is smart. I ride brakeless and will never use another tire other than gatorskins. It's lasted well over 3 months now. I'm about 2/3 through

I have had good luck with the Continental Grand Prix 4000s tires. I had 2000 miles on my 4000s before I got my first flat.

However, Michelin has released their Race Pro 3 and they have gotten very good reviews. I would probably buy which ever tire I got the best deal on.

word, Brooklyn's also been bad for me in terms of major potholes causing wheels to go out of true :(

Gatorskin up front and Randonneur in the back. Best tire combination for city riding. Both puncture resistant and the Randonneur is great for skidding.
