Touring - Our Three Day Bike Trip. With Pics. Awww yeah.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Wow. This was quite a trip. The first day involved 7+ hours of riding. At least 5 of those hours was in the sun at 100 degree weather. We got a late start at 4pm and headed up with our loaded trailers up to the U. From there we took the Bonneville Shoreline Trail to Emigration Canyon.

Emigration Canyon (http://www.saltlakecycling.com/showride.php?rideID=1008) is a nice, steady incline of about 7.8 miles to the summit. Elevation gain is 1478 feet, making it about 1974 feet total from our house to the summit. We probably gained another 415 feet after that riding to our campground at Affleck Park. I think we arrived at the campground around 11pm.
Emigration Canyon is a hot spot for roadies. We were the only ones carrying trailers.

Pepe le Pew. Can you see him down at the bottom? He was quite brave, waltzing through our camp during dinner. I didn't want him to get too close, though.

It was a pretty fun ride, all in all. Tweaked my knee a little bit, we both got somewhat dehydrated even though we drank TONS, and my fingers are feeling just a tad numb. The ride home was nice. Almost downhill the whole way. :)
We have a lot more pictures here (http://joe-and-heather.smugmug.com/gallery/5576621_KZ7yH/6/341953148_RZDwJ#P-1-16) if you want to check them out.

cool pics! such beautiful landscapes...Thanks for sharing.
although now my wife will want us to do something like this...I usually am the one dragging her out to ride, but she loves the wild & wooly outdoors...
Alas, I am a wimp about roughing it (I'm more like the wife on Green Acres - I want five star pampering after a ride.:o)
Looks like ya'll had fun. If I was capable of feeling emotion, I would be jealous and happy for you.

Great pics! For some reason I'm a little surprised you brought freeze-dried food. Ben has a park? More Shadiyah in skimpy top. Less Joe playing hacky sack. This is training for a bigger ride, no? You need to work out a system for daily updates: small laptop, satellite phone.

What do you think we should have brought? Those meals are great if you are trying to keep your load as light as possible. :) Plus, we got a kajillion of them as a wedding gift. :) Yup, we are in training for our Continental Divide Ride (Canada to Mexico). We will probably bring a laptop for that.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly fine with freeze-dried food. I just thought for a short trip you might have made a gourmet dinner and brought along a bottle of wine in the trailer. :p

Oh that would have been heavenly. Still, those trailers were damn heavy and I'm kind of glad that we didn't bring any heavier foods or beverages. Kinda. That would have been so nice on that second that. :)

Great photos of what had to be a wonderful time. Shredding it up with a footbag is always fun!!!:thumb: A hard day of riding sure makes for a good night’s sleep.
The Great Divide bike route sounds like an awesome ride. I have a friend that did the Banff to Tetons part and 3 years later now she is still in awe of what she saw. I’d love to be able to take the time to ride it someday. Really REALLY looking forward to reading/seeing photos of that ride of yours.:thumb:
Cool pics. That ride up Emigration is nice since they essentially made a bike lane all the way up.
It's hard enough pedaling my fat arse up that hill I can't imagine pulling a trailer.

Emigration is great now, I did that ride a few dozen times a few years ago then wrote it off due to bad road conditions. Its smooth as silk with nice shoulders almost all the way up. I think we saw 50+ people riding emigration on Monday alone.
I ran into another BikeForums member just after the first switchback, I forget his user name, but if he sees this, Hi! :D

Joe will be taking the nice camera on the CDT, so hopefully some nicer pics to be seen.

JR97, camping is illegal there, but we didn't have any luck finding any other camping spots this side of Big Mountain Pass, we hung out until after dark to setup our tent and were out of there the next morning before sunrise.
(BTW, this thread started out in Foo, I think that should explain most of the posts in the thread...)

Great pics. Good for you! I want to mtn bike tour so baaad. I always wanted to ride in the Teton area when I was a grad student, but, never had the money. And, since then, I've added the rest of the continental divide to the wish list. However, now that I have the money, I don't have the time.

That was our dinner for two nights. :) They are dehydrated meals that are light and convenient to take on tours where every ounce counts. They are pretty good. I think we liked the Kathmandu Curry better than the Pad Thai.
Oh and thanks for the nice comments. :)

It's really quite fun. I've never toured on a road bike before, in fact, I've only gone on a couple of tours altogether.

The Great Divide will be the ultimate tour. We are leaving in a couple of weeks, ohmygoodness. I hope you get a chance to do it someday, FlowerBlossom! Btw, did you ever make the energy bars? :)
