Mountain Biking - Help Me Decide How to Spend My B-Day Money

So Mom and Dad recently came for a visit and before they left slipped me $150 for my birthday. I am considering investing in a better saddle or purchasing some eyewear and I would like advice regarding what I should purchase.

First, this summer I've been spending a lot more time in the saddle and I've noticed my "parts" are getting a bit numb at times so I've been thinking about buying a saddle with a channel. Anyone have any experiences or suggestions? I know I'll have to try them out but I'm looking to narrow down the field.

Second, I've been riding without eyewear lately since I broke my last pair and I was wondering what other people liked. I'm in southern California and I do a good bit of riding in areas that are exposed so it's not just eye protection but also relief from the sun.

Anyway I'm off to the LBS to look around and then to the Dodger's game but I'm hoping for some sage advice next time I log in.

I would go with a saddle. I have a WTB Laser V Team and it's great. Specialized makes good saddles too, IMO. For eyeware I usually go with cheap shaded safety glasses since I always scratch them up and/or lose them.

I'd get a new saddle. Also, are you wearing a chamois?

Second on the WTB, I have a Speed V, comfortable even without a chamios.

Adjust your saddle first...if that doesn't work then go with a new saddle.
Better yet, your eyes are one of the most important organs in your body.
Protection is a must. Spend the money on sun glasses.

I would say both- get a pair of Tifosis (I love mine) and a WTB saddle. They're super comfortable.

I'm back from the LBS. Yep, I ride with a chamois and I've tried adjusting the saddle forward and back. I've kept it relatively level but then that's how I've been told MTB saddles were supposed to be. WTB seems to be the most common saddle brand mentioned on the mountain bike board. Any preference for particular saddles? I'm not really a weight weenie...

I'm coming to G-Monkey's conclusion that it may be possible to do both as Performance seems to have some relatively cheap glasses sitting around. I'm assuming polycarbonate lenses are the way to go.

The Laser V is a classic- super comfortable. Personally, I like the Silverado. But they're all good.

Bike parts are overrated.

I ride a WTB Pure V saddle in XC + AM conditions. it's good. no problems with it. others will recommend WTB saddles, i'm sure.

in terms of eyewear, i've been a solid fan of Ryders sunglasses

i think the glasses are geared for bikers, but i was buying these before i got serious into biking. they look great, they protect your eyes (i use 'em while working + biking), and they won't cost a huge fortune. i usually get a pair for 40 - 50$, and have to replace them once a year (i'm abusive :)).

I've been riding on someone else's bike, they have a WTB SST.X... Fairly comfortable. I've been looking to upgrade over my stock Gary Fisher... Any of those new WTB's comparable to the SST.X?

Anyway I have a fizik arione on my mountain bike (is that even allowed?) and I like it. The saddle is pricey though, you wouldn't be able to get the sunglasses as well.

If money's tight, there's no excuse at all to spend > $40 at the most on sunglasses. I'll second the Tifosi comment above. I've had a pair for 8 months or so that I got for half price ($15!) and they've been great.
