Northern California - LABOR DAY Ride 1st September Mt. Hamilton

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm a solid maybe. Getting back from a business trip to Atlanta that friday night. So unless I get an invite to go camping that weekend (and an invite that involves leaving town LATE friday rather than mid-afternoon), I'll be there!
I'll meet you guys at the entrance to Grant park by the water spigot.
Mt. Hamilton is long but not steep (20 miles @ 5% grade). Most people take 1.5-2.5 hours. Almost any regular cyclist can do it if they pace themself. You don't need real low gears because the road never gets very steep. There is little shade, so it can get hot sometimes.
OIC... that doesn't sound too bad then. Of course that also could be my own wishful thinking... UGH!
I wonder if I can get my buddies Eric (Airrix) and Andy (NeCro632) out too?

Excellent, the AutoBus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autobus_(cycling)) is forming!

I'm sure there are "Low Brows" like me that don't know what an "Autobus" is. So here you go...I like it btw. Be Proud! There is strength in numbers. I'm going with a 1 speed for this ride so I will spend a lot of time with you guys...and I'll be happy:love:
The autobus or the gruppetto is the name given to the group of cyclists in a road cycling race who form a large group behind the main peloton.
The autobus forms on mountain stages when non-climbers fall off the back of peloton during the climb. Gradually some riders fall off the back of the peloton and form a large group at the end of the race. These riders are generally sprinters or domestiques unconcerned about their finishing positions in the mountain stages. Their primary concern is beating the elimination time to ensure their survival in a multi-stage race such as the Tour de France.
If the autobus arrives outside the elimination time, the organisers may extend the elimination time if the autobus is large enough. However if a rider is dropped from the autobus in this situation they will almost certainly be eliminated unless they have suffered an accident, in which case they may be exempted.[1]
Due to the common interest in survival the mood in the autobus has a greater sense of camaraderie than in the main peloton. Riders often assist one another with food and drinks despite riding for separate teams.[2]

Cathy said she would have to move to the back of the "AutoBus"...I think she would have to get off at the 1st stop;)
If you can't keep up with the "Autobus" does that mean you're a "Succubus"?:twitchy:

The actual day I rode with the NorCal group for the first time was for the Tour de Max -http://www.tourdemax.org/ (http://www.tourdemax.org/) (coming up this Sunday) I’m doing it!
I can’t remember the first guy I met, but he’s moved on and I don’t feel like researching to find his name. I remember riding my bike through the parking lot and hearing a loud voice laughing. The guy was wearing a Triple Crown jersey… From his demeanor I knew right away it was Ron! I was right. I think driving a taxi for ten years you develop a second sense and can key in and get a sense of identity of individuals pretty quick.
Oh yeah, the Tour de Max - I think that's where I met many of you.
Stolen from Pete's TdM thread from last year:

Happy anniversary, y'all!
I'll set a personal record on it for sure. I've never done the climb! At the moment, I'm no longer a maybe. I'm in.

Hey Alan! everyone kept talking about Sesame Crunch! and I kept missing you. I remember thinking "What's a Sesamet Crunch"
I thought Paula and Jo we're pretty cute and I can't think of the pretty one L front...I remember thinking "Wow I like this gang"
Ron! man! you dumped some weight this year! You look more like Racheal now! : )
Scratch me off the list. I'm not ready for this one.

Everyone's ready for Hamilton, just show up and rock it!
Not me Reid. I got my butt kicked on today's ride. Lots of climbing. Mt. Hamilton will have to wait for next year when I'm in better shape (and maybe another 20 pounds lighter).

You'll come out of today's ride stronger. Just don't let the fitness you've gain today slip away.
At the very least, keep the fitness level enough to ride the Autobus!
