Training & Nutrition - any suggestions for someone with a new indoor trainer

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi all!

New to the forum and I was looking for some help. I road some this past summer and I was doing 10 miles in 45 - 50 mins on a Giant Boulder SE mountain bike. I have aquired a Schwinn Traveler from the late 70's early 80's era and I have a CycleOps Magneto trainer. I have been biking with the trainer on the Schwinn for about three weeks now, trying to bike about 3 or 4 times a week for at least a half-an-hour.

Are there other things that I should be doing along with this. Sometime in mid-August there is a Century Kilometer Ride in my town. What are some tips that you can give for me to be ready for the ride. I am a bit over weight (6 foot tall, 230 lbs) and I want to also loose the weight while training. I live in Southern Wisconsin, so outdoors is out for about 3 to 4 months yet.

Thanks, and sorry if I rambled on about nothing.

Andy

Take a look at my latest post about Adkins diet (no I am not an advocate). I outline what I did to get in shape and loose 30 lbs. There are others out there with even better advice. You may want to do a search for posts by KOFFEE BROWN. She is ausome and VERY well informed!!

The short answer is to get a heart rate monitor and do a lot of riding in Zone 2 to develop your arobic endurance. You will want to do lots of miles!! If you can put in 2-4 hour rides once or twice a week on top of regular shorter training rides you will be in good shape. You may want to invest in "The Cyclist's Training Bible". It gets technical at times, but gives you everything you will need to set up a program to get you in shape for your August ride.

I hope this helps...Bill
