Recumbent - Recumbent Retreat 2008 nearly-the-last announcement

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If you're coming to the 10th annual Recumbent Retreat (http://www.recumbentretreat.org/) in two weeks, this message is for you! (If not, see you next year!)

OK, first off, the most important thing you need to know about the Recumbent Retreat this year is this:
THE PHOTO SHOOT HAS MOVED!
Due to storm damage (I'll get to that) at the Battery Russell parking lot, it was decided to move the photo shoot to the main campground, near the primary campsite (#218). Like last year, it will happen at 10:15AM on Saturday the 16th.

If you're camping, you should be getting your site assignments this week if they haven't already arrived in the mail.

If you're coming out for the day or if you're not camping at Fort Stevens, you can still park at Battery Russell- the parking lot is OK. The campground is just a short ride on the trails from there. The trees that used to form a backdrop for the group photo are about 2/3 gone. What's visible now is the road and ugly hillside.

If you're arriving Friday night (or earlier), come to the Fort Stevens amphitheater at 8:30PM for the Fort Stevens premiere of "BENT"- the film about (what else) recumbent bikes. Most of it was filmed at last year's Retreat, so you'll see a few familiar faces, including yours truly. The campground folks are combining this with one of their regular shows and will be advertising it to the entire campground. This will give us the opportunity to let people know about Saturday's lighted bike parade!

Enough "ifs"... I spent Saturday on a final reconnaissance of all the routes and repainting all of the "Dan Henry" marks. Since most of the old ones had been paved over or simply faded, I took the opportunity to revise a couple routes. Here's what you'll be looking for:

Breakfast Club (to Arnie's): Yellow Pancakes
Straight Shot to Seaside: Orange Triangles
Lewis and Clark Route to Seaside: Blue Squares
Historic Fort Clatsop: White Inverted Triangles
Waterfall Wanderer: Green X's
Maps will be available at Recumbent Central (space #218) Saturday morning. In addition to these rides, Connie McAyeal will be leading a “Stay Together” ride for those of you who want to explore the area close to camp.

In general, the roads are still in good shape. There are spots where a lot of blow-down is visible from the road, but there is no obvious pavement damage. (If you missed what happened last December, watch The Discovery Channel's "Ax Men". The storm is a major part of several episodes.) Highway 101 ("Straight Shot") still has some rough, narrow shoulders, Lewis & Clark Road is still very smooth (but there's new clear-cuts), and Youngs River Road is OK except in the area around the falls. We should have a fine time!

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone!

P.S. If you have any questions, just reply to this posting and we'll get back to you.

P.P.S. Remember: Photo shoot is at 10:15AM on Saturday in the main campground near site #218!
