Utility Cycling - uncoated CETMAracks

I'm thinking about getting a CETMArack, I would like to get the uncoated rack, I'm afraid it may start rusting. I would like to know if it will. Or if I would be able to clear coat it or something like that. I'm just not a fan of black powdercoat.

I'm planing on getting the 5rail. to carry whatever.

Also any Ideas on a back rack that would be strong & compliment the CETMA?

It will rust. It's not provided uncoated for you to run it that way, but so that you can have it painted/coated your own choice of colour. Clearcoat on bike frames typically ends up with ugliness underneath it, too. Chrome it maybe? Or silver paint/powdercoat?

You can get powdercoat in all sorts of colors, or even clear. I'd say nickel plating is probably the most durable treatment you could go with (best is high phosphorous electroless nickel process). Not quite as shiny as chrome, which I consider a plus, and much less likely to chip. nickel is used under chrome plating, so most any plating shop can do it.

I agree with what the others have said- it will rust eventually and standard clearcoat will not prevent this.

If you want something durable and 'different' you can take the rack to your local Line-X place and have it sprayed with truck bed liner. It'll add a bit of weight but who cares- this is utility cycling!

I believe you can buy 'apply at home' truck bed liner at the auto parts store but I have no idea how durable it is, I can tell you from experience that Line-X is good stuff.

buy a coated one and paint it. the paint will wear and you can repaint it. The coating under the paint will protect it.
