Bicycle Mechanics - Jesus Christmas Why Can't I Get my Tire Off?

It is stuck to the rim like it's glued there. The tire is a 32x700c Kenda Panaracer, and the rim is an older Araya, also 700c. I've measured, and it seems the Araya is wider than normal rims - could this be the fault? I've spent about an hour with hammers and tire tools trying to take this thing off, and I haven't been able to lift the tire off the rim at all. Thanks a lot for your help.

Make sure to go all the way around the tire making sure the bead is broken loose from the rim all the way around.

This article sort of explains it. I still use levers, regardless of what the artilce says. I just like the tip about getting slack.

Practice, practice, practice. It's quite possible all your other tires were faking it.:p

Take ALL of the air out of the tyre... Then squeeze the tyre edges together so they leave a gap on the side of the rim. This typically drops them down in a channel in the middle of the rim and gives you move room to pull a bead over the rim.

is it a tubular tyre that is glued onto the sprint rim.

I tried removing the air, but to no avail. I've removed dozens of tires on dozens of rims before without any problem, but even my LBS says they can't get it off without cutting it. Does this just happen from time to time, or is it a problem inherent to the rim? I would hate to reuse the wheel and have to go through this problem all over again just because I ran over a chunk of glass.

Who installed the tire that is on there now? Once you get it off you should be able to see if it was glued on by some idiot or if there is a problem with the rim its self. Good luck

If it's been on there a while it might have just done it itself. I had a bike that, while admittedly was only infrequently ridden for most of its life, never had a flat in 14 years. I'm not sure what exact process caused it (dry rot or something?), but I basically had to destroy the old tires to get them off when I finally wanted new tires.

Correct. I called on Shiva and the tire blew itself apart.

Actually, I just ended up cutting it. A pair of Contis went on just fine - the tires were sorta old. Thanks for the advice anyhow.

I have had some tire (performance gt2/k 700/28 on a sun sr18 rim) that were really hard to put on and worse to take off. I had to use 2 or 3 steel and several plastic levers to get them off. Replaced with Panracec T-serv...and not problems. I think there are just some tire/size/rim combo that are really tight.
