I heard an ad on the radio today on my way home from work. It was from Joey Vento at Geno's Steaks, and he says he's tired of rowdy cyclists in his city! He wants everyone to sign a petition for the police to start clamping down on cyclists running red lights and putting the citizens of Philadelphia at risk.

Ain't that somethin! We'd all better watch out so we don't get pulled over for speeding or rolling through stops!

Nice. If Philly is anything like Noo Yawk, I suggest you set up a similar petition to stop drivers from parking in bike lanes, and to obey all traffic controls. ;)

That's a bad thing?

No, it's not. I just didn't expect Geno's steaks to be so vocal about it!

Yep.

So go to Pat's!

Nope. Both places are dreadful. I don't eat cheesesteaks anymore, but when I did, I never went to either place after the first visit. They're overblown tourist traps. Real South Philly types go to their local steak and hoagie shop.

VB !

This will put the law on your side!!

btw: We make our own cheese-steaks at home with sliced-steak from local butchershop. We have great family run bakeries here as well. Add your choices of cheeses, fried onions, etc, with micro-brew to wash it down; doesn't get much better!!

There is no legal argument about following the law (Vehicular Bicycling...).

I commute to Center City daily and always obey all traffic lights and never ride on the sidewalk. The only concession I make to lawlessness is rolling through a 4-way stop sign. I'm on the road and I'm operating a vehicle. The only way that motorists are gonna respect bicyclists is if they use the same rules of the road. It works for me. I signal when turning. When a car lets me go by or gives me the right of way, I give a friendly wave.

On the other hand, I think Vento's got some kinda crappy attitude that cyclists are a menace, so screw him...

+1000000 to everything you said (except rolling through stop signs- unfortunately, too many cyclists do the same thing, putting you at risk).

nothing but a tourist spot anyways. 7 bucks for a cheesesteak?! who are you kidding. even the steaks at a food truck are better...

Not true, actually. Pat's original owner was the creator of the first "Philadelphia Steak Sandwich," and the original owner of Geno's put cheese on it - creating the first cheese steaks. So yeah, they're tourist spots, but they're also the first ones to do it. Kind of a Philly and SEPA pride thing :)

Both Pats and Genos have gotten way too expensive and the steaks have gotten smaller. There are better to be had.

I sent Geno's an e-mail letting them know that changing bicyclists habits requires engineering and education as well as enforcement, and that NBW has been teaching bike safety to youth in Philadelphia for over ten years. I asked Mr. Vento for some support for our mission. The silence has been deafening. Perhaps he knows I'm a vegetarian... The best Philly Cheesteak is Gianna's not Geno's and they love bikes there, too.

Joey Vento became a celebrity-whiner when he demanded that people order in english.

It sounds like he's trying to parlay that 'star power' (heh) into being a crusader against anyfing Joey don't like.

It's a real shame Joey don't like bikes. Sou' philwwy could use a break from the overcrowding of cars and trucks all over the streets and even some sidewalks.

......... and putting the citizens of Philadelphia at risk.

But chostoerol, fat , grease and cheese dripping from 15,000 calorie carbohydrate
product is insuring their safety ? :P I was there a few years ago and about 10
Hispanic teenagers were acting out every move of the WWF wrestling how they just
saw complete with table dives, sleeper holds and all !! Great fun !! :D

Should write Pat's and ask them to be a champion for bikes, see if they pick up extra business.

+Eleventy million. The Basic Four in Reading Terminal makes a good one too, although it's pricey. Enough to share, though, so it's not too bad. I don't know how they feel about bikes :o
