View Full Version : How to retrofit a lightning frame for another seat

I have written about this issue before but didn't get much feedback. I'm more determined now. I do not like the mesh seat on my Lightning Phantom. I ride a diamond frame now and will probably continue that way but I also love recumbents, always have since I discovered them. I was able to get an aluminum seat from Organic Engines in FL and it fits fine and it's not bad for rides around the 'hood but it's a little too reclined. I'd prefer a more erect seat such as the various Rans models or the new Sprinter Seat by Easy Racers. The thing is, it seems any new seat I get will require some holes to be drilled into the frame, and that's what has been holding me back. I hardly ever ride it and it just sits there in my living room, which sucks. I do not want to sell it because I think I'll really enjoy it if I can change this one thing. Realistically, I don't see much risk in drilling a few holes for a seat brace, even though it will void the warranty. I weigh 275 (but losing). Correct me if I'm wrong but it's really the wheels that are at risk from a heavy load, more than the frame; and they are easily replaceable. My Phantom model is the one from several years ago that has the moveable seat bracket, unlike the new ones with permanently attached brackets. Surely there are others out there who have done this. If so, could you share your ideas and pictures. Thanks.
