'84 vintage Trek 610, I like everything about it. And I think I've a bearing problem in the rear hub. Is there anything I can do to keep it vintage if the race is bad too? Or do I have to upgrade from the 6 speed cassette?

Thanks for any help,
JAK

I haven't been inside my set of wheels (i should!), but assuming the race is not replacable, if the race is worn, you have to replace the hub. There's nothing else that uses the Helico freewheel, so you'll have to go with a threaded hub. If you get one with the as-original 126 mm spacing, you then need to get a suitable 6 or 7 speed freewheel for it.

Or if you need to you can buy my little-used set of original wheels for the 610 (cheep). I use 700C tubulars on mine, with old Campy Record hubs.

Wow, thanks for the offer. Questions; is the anodized black still on the brake pad areas? How come you changed from the original? When you spin them are they smooth, i.e., now bearing sounds? How much? How much do you think it might be to upgrade and have front and back?

Please PM me, thanks again,
