Touring - Interesting idea, maybe its been done before

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Im shopping for a touring frame to build up

I don't know how this came up in my mind but I thought it would be cool to take a frame, preferably with a trashed paintjob, strip the paint, spray it matte black or white or some solid. Then on your tours and adventures and etc, have people sign and draw with a pen on the frame. Would be a nice way to remember all the people you meet and I think it would make for an interesting looking frame too

So if anyone has a beat up old touring frame 52-54cm in need of new paint, let me know ;)

No thoughts at all :-\
Encouragement? Scorn? Absolute indifference?

How to you prevent the signatures from smearing or running on the frame?

your biggest obstacle would be finding the right paint/pen combination. i guess oil based paint markers would be your best bet for durability. they shouldn't wash off in the rain and will stick to most surfaces. problem is, they are also kind of notorious for running during use. you could end up with a bike with very drippy signatures. plus, there is a chance that names written early on in your trip would be faded by then of the trip.

interesting idea though. i'd do some tests before committing.

A bit like signing the plaster on a broken leg or arm.

The paint/marker pen issue would need sorting, but I think there are indelible pens/markers on the market. There's a white marker I have noticed on various industrial items that seems almost indestructable. The "canvas", however, would seem to have its limitations in shape (of tubing) and area.

Somehow, however, I think a jersey would be a more likely proposition -- like sports team jerseys, it could be framed and hung on a wall as a lasting memento and talking point.
