Hi,

I'm in the process of 'modernising' my old Raleigh Pulsar, probably considered a waste of time to most people but the bike has huge sentimental value, and I've started using it again as a commute bike. Anyway, the old brake callipers were pretty useless so I bought a pair of Shimano Ultegra brakes. On attempting to fit them I've realised that the new brakes seem to use a recessed nut, unlike the old brakes which used an exposed retaining/fixing nut. The hole in the front forks is too narrow to accommodate the new nut so I've reamed the rear of the hole so that the nut is a very snug fit, however I'm unsure as to what length nut I should really be using, the standard (10mm) nut only winds onto the pivot bolt threads by about 2.5mm. To keep things 'safe' should I try and locate the longest nut that will fit, like 18mm?

ream out the hole a little bigger so the recessed nut fit well and turn will out griding in the hole. now for the rear brake it best to get another front brake to work with the bridge on the frame. the longer bolt will go though the hole and allow you to use hardware to fasten it.

So the pivot bolt for the new rear caliper is going to be too long then? The mounting tube (the bridge?) is only 13mm wide.
