WAMPO recently put out a survey, asking people's opinions on how to improve the Wichita, Kansas city infrastructure. I'd urge all Wichita area cyclists to fill it out, since Wichita is one of the least bike friendly cities around, and it genuinely sounds like they might try and improve it. It's not limited to just Wichita residents, so if you live around the area (or don't, but would like to see one more bike friendly city), you can still fill it out.

I suppose I should also note, for those of you that haven't been to Wichita, it's the biggest city in Kansas, and is one of the least bike friendly places imaginable. It's designed in a grid system with square mile blocks, and little to no side roads inside these square miles (they are mostly dead end residential roads). The travelable roads are all 4-6 lanes, with speed limits no less than 40mph, and cars travelling no less than 55 mph, and there is no shoulder at all, just a 1 foot wide drainage area that is full of cracks and debris. Even as a pedestrian, there are no crosswalks except at these 1 mile intervals, and crossing these streets is undoubtibly risking one's life, even if you are in a crosswalk and have the signal. The culture is very car oriented, and drivers have no respect for pedestrians or cyclists. It's truly an awful situation to be a vehicular cyclist in, especially coming from an Upstate New York town where people understood the traffic laws and were courteous to both peds and cyclists.

So, some of the things on that survey may seem obvious and not extreme enough for some people, but, any change to the city infrastructure would be beneficial.
