I've seen this question raised in LCF though not recently. Is it more efficient for 100 people driving 100 cars to a wedding or for one airplane to move the 100? The metric under consideration is the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere.

According to our DEFRA-based calculations, each wedding-bound car is emitting 104 kg CO2 over the trip; that's a total of 10,400 kg CO2 for 100 cars. If the guests all flew, they would each emit 184 kg -- times 100 passengers would be 18,400 kg CO2. I can further tell you that the Boeing 737-300 that United flies on its Philadelphia-Boston route holds around 128 passengers, so if the plane were full (wedding crashers!), the total emissions would be a bit higher.

Of course, the real solution would be to take a train, but not always possible. But still thinking that there are many culprits in the saga of C02 emissions.

Three things not accounted for in this "calculation":

1. Assuming all people come from the same area – otherwise, they can't share an aircraft –, they could carpool. You could reduce emissions drastically if people were going at a very conservative average of 2.5 persons/car.

2. Airplane transport doesn't even account for the fuel people need to spend to reach the airport... unless they walk the distance.

3. The bus would probably be even more ecological than the train.

Because the average person hasn't ridden a bicycle since childhood, and isn't about to start for a wedding...

As others have said, the most efficient practical situation would be to carpool.
