Cyclocross - Frames with huge clearance aside from the Cross Check.......

I'm giving my Klein MTB to the wife and I'm planning on utilizing the fattest tires possible when I cruise around some rocky singletrack with her. I love the CC for the versatility that it offers and all, but I'm not a huge fan of its boat anchorness. Is there anything that'll give me CC type clearance that weighs less, aside from just getting a 29er and getting stuck with slacker angles?

Looking to spend at or below a grand, BTW.

Singular Peregrine. Can take up to 48mm tires. Just as versatile as cross check, and much better looking.

The Singular is nice, but not available on this side of the Atlantic.
The La Cruz can take only up to a 38mm tire, not a 45 like the Cross Check.
I can't think of another bike like the CC that takes that big of a tire, unless you go custom. Curtlo may still be under a grand for a frame.

Heck, even my K2 can comfortably fit 40s with a little room to spare.

I take back what I said about the La Cruz--the Salsa website claims a 38mm max, but here's a Salsa employee with 44mm Mutanoraptors:

There are quite a few bikes for a grand or less with a lower weight than the Cross Check. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking anything.

I am with you on this one. I also would like something lighter than a CC and for less than a grand. What have you found?

Dang, too late, my bike is already done a while ago, I wasn't going to wait for them to be available to ship to NA. When you get it, please post pics.:) What size did you order and how much?

I got a Large. It's about the same size as my current 60cm Gunnar Crosshairs. I might have gone a bit bigger, but Large is the biggest they have and it should work out fine.
My total bill was US$725, but that included a Brooks Pro and the shipping. Sam from Singular sent me an invoice through Paypal, and they automatically converted my $ to pounds. No hassles at all.
