Thought I'd drop a note to my fellow bikies. I signed up for BikeForums in September and kind of forgot about it with all the craziness going on. I got the BikeForums Community reminder the other day and thought I'd check out what I'd been missing. This seems to be a really cool place to hang out and I've posted quite a few times in the past few days. I think I'm addicted;)
I'm going to hit the big Five-O in April (I think I'm more fit and certainly a better rider than when I was in my twenties and thirties) and I've been riding since my teens. My first bike was a Gitane (French) when I was 14 and I thought I was pretty cool since not many people had a "racing bike" back then. I've been mostly a roadie since, although I have a Cannondale mountain bike that I use when I ride with my sons and daughter. I also have a Cannondale tandem (MTB) set up for the road. My first really nice bike was a Trek 770 from the late 80's that served me well until I upgraded four years ago to a Litespeed Classic. The Trek was converted to a fixed-gear for commuting/training and is a blast to ride. My road miles are on the Litespeed that I love to ride. I upgraded the wheels to Mavic Ksyriums last year (got a super deal from a racer friend - lightly used). Get in about 2500 miles of rides a year, plus the commuting miles - hope for more next year.
The weather in Ohio is usually nasty for 4-6 months of the year since I live near Lake Erie. Lots of snow to the east of the city (suburb of Cleveland). Decent skiing if you are into that (no downhill for me thank you). I ride with a club in the area and I'm an active member (I do a lot of the work for the club and maintain the web site Cleveland Touring Club (http://www.clevetourclub.org) ) and ride whenever I can. My lovely wife of 26 years is very understanding and encouraging of my sport (thankfully) and I plan to continue riding as long as I can stay up on the bike. As soon as the days get a little lighter I'll restart the bike commute. I work past 5:30 p.m. and it is a dark ride home (even with lots of light on the bike) on some streets with fast moving traffic. I can handle it in the daylight but would hate to get smacked from behind in the dark.
