I just recently bought a Trek fx 7.2, and I would like to make it faster. My brother and friend that I ride with both have Trek 1.2 (road bike). I would like to buy a full one CC but cant afford it right now. But I am considering modifying it. Already planning drop bars and road style shifters (used, buddy of mine selling them to me cheap). I need to be little faster though, to keep up with my brother. What can I do?

I have the same bike and put some Continental 4 Season tires on it (700x28). They roll much faster than the stock 700x35 Bontragers and I improved my best metric century ride by 2 mph. Good luck!

Currently running Specialized 700x28 all condition tires. Anything else I can do?

clipless pedals? i'd suggest SPDs, and be sure to get a set of clip-in platforms for it too.

What else have you done to the bike?

Clipless pedals are a good suggestion, because you're attached to the pedals at any part of your stroke. If you aren't wild on that, you could always get a set of clips and straps to get a similar result. You could also add some bar ends to mimic bullhorns and make climbing easier/faster. Another possibility would be flipping the stem. This may or may not actually help you get anywhere as far as speed, but it could theoretically help you get a little more of a tuck to cut down on wind resistance.

Aside from that, make sure your tires are chock full of air, and it wouldn't hurt to let some air out of your brother's tires. If that doesn't work, make him drink a big glass of milk before each ride.

Well, you can't go back in time and save up for the bike you really wanted. But it might be a lesson for the future.
