I bought a used fork today and the previous owner didn't have time to take it to the shop to take the baseplate/crown race off..

He was using a Chris King headset, and I have a race face headset. (I'm guessing the base plate is chris king as well)

Will I need to take it to the shop to get my base plate off the old fork and put it on my new fork. Or can I use the previous owners base plate, with the headset on my frame?

Is their a specific tool I would need to remove it?

yea that part is actually called a 'crown' actually

you need a 'crown puller' theyre pretty expensive and not worth buying

you also need a 'crown setter' to press the new crown back on...also not worth buying

you CAN take those on and off without these tools but regardless of your skills youll damage the crown even just a little, which can turn out pretty noticeable on something like your headset
