Commuting - LBS employee a good salesman.

Stopped by the local LBS to burn time before work and saw they had a Lemond Poprad Disc. The salesman convinced me that its the last one they'll ever carry (since Trek dropped Lemond), its a perfect fit for me, and that others are looking at it too so I better buy quick. I took it out for a ride and I love it. I currently ride a Kona Jake and I desperatly want the Poprad but I can't justify the upgrade. I hate the salesman for this torment!

I have two feelings on this. The first I have a Lemond Etape which by no means the same bike (I know the Poprad Disc has disc brakes and steel frame just offhand) and I absolutely love the bike. The second is this is a common sales tactic and you will find yourself having these ideas even when not nudged by the salesman. This is the "there will never be an awesome deal like this again!" tactic. I am really bad about this with cars.

To give you one example, BMW recently released a 1 series bmw with a 6 cylinder twin turbo for a very reasonable price (a "1 series" price to be exact). I recognized it as something special before it even came out and the engine has already gone on to win awards and the car lots of praise. Now I don't know if you saw Transformers but Chevy is bringing the camaro back and it looks better than ever (as far as more recent years). To top it off Dodge is bringing the challenger back. Other car makers are in the works of developing fuel cell or biodiesel oriented cars that while not out yet are going to be hot when they come out. The fact is there will always be something else very very awesome if you pass on the at-the-moment deal. Unfortunately in the moment you will be kicking yourself but if you hang in you will see something as good or better will follow not long afterwards.

A. I always hate myself after a salesman gets the best of me. You made it home with your wallet intact; that is good. If you are willing to spend Poprad dollars, you have a whole world of good options. Don't buy under pressure!

Sounds like a jerk. My automatic response to pressure sales is "no sale." Short of a house I'll skip almost any purchase if the salesman pressures me. If I really need it I'll come in later and go through a different salesman.

dont hate on the salesman, at least with our shop its actually trying to look out for our customers. All of the 09 stuff is going up like 15-20% for the same exact product and we cant get any more 08 stuff so what we have is what we have. Dont make commission so i could care less about "making a sale" its just being a bike dork i honestly belive more bikes = better and being a shop rat im always broke so less money for the same thing is always better as well.

It is true that Trek is sold out of Poprad discs. All that is left is whats in the bike shops.

Agreed. This is why I tend to shop for expensive things online. First, there's almost always a better selection, and second, I don't have uninformed people trying to push me toward expensive objects to fill quotas. One should never rush into large purchases.

Sounds like the OP was donig the sale job on himself and the LBS guy was just providing the facts.

With the money saved from cycle commuting, the bike will be payed for in a short time.

The salesman said that Trek dropped Lemond but what will happen to them? Is Lemond as a company still going to be around? Are they going to be available anywhere if they do stay in business?
