I've never been so sad to think about taking a bike apart, and watch it sit as a frame before. Don't get me wrong, this bike has been in that naked state before for months at a time. This time is different, I don't exactly understand why, but it is.

My trusty friend is a steel, Campy clad, Raleigh International, I bought as a training aid about 3 years ago for the winter. If you race and are sponsored you know the deal. Every January you receive a new bike which you train/ race on through the season, after the season you turn it in for a new one. You don't grow to love the bike, or form a relationship. It is simply a tool to get you over that finish line. It's not your friend, it doesn't call to you, or make you want to ride a little bit longer before it gets dark.

That is what my Raleigh has turned into. Tons of memories of cold long winter days, or quick runs on it to the Post Office. It has been my bike to beat up, ride in the rain and snow, and simply ride. It doesn't have high end Record or Chorus parts on it. Is weighed down by the lights for commuting, and heavy duty wheels for training in the winter. But it's my bike that will never leave my side, never need to be turned in, or given up.

A month ago, I broke down and purchased a new frame. A shiny gold, Orbea Altec. It's so smooth looking, I know simply by looks it has to go faster. The weight is lighter than paper, and the ride is going to be butter. It is hanging up, calling my name everyday at work, wanting and crying to be built and ridden. This bike will soon be turned into my friend. The bike I will roll out the front door every morning to goto work and ride until its dark in the middle of the summer.
The sad part of all this is I can't ride both bikes at one time. I won't ever share the amount of time I share with my Raleigh now, with it ever again. I'll ride it in the winter, and when it's nasty weather.. but the memory making will be less and less. I feel like a 5th grader, with two best friends. One with all the memories, that I have to leave behind. One with no memories at all, but is just waiting to make some.

I know the feelings as I'm feeling the same right now, I've been riding my mountain bike (converted to road) for 1.1/2 years now and done 3500km, recently I bought a real road bike and I was wanting to sell her, I clean her thoroughly yesterday and put back the offroad tires fixed back the suspension fork convert back to mountain bike. After everything was done she sat on my bedroom then I stared for an hour just recalling, there were so many beautiful memories I've shared with her, riding in the rain, my first 5 hrs journey, all the adventure we went thru and I feel so bad for letting her go when she was so faithfull holding up all kinda torture, almost like a betrayal. Sounds crazy but seriously this is whats on my mind.

I can't be riding 2 bikes plus I live in an apartment and there're no place for a bike let alone 2! Can't believe it can get so emotional afterall its just a bike!

Its gonna get scarey if you guys named the bike "Christine" LOL
But yes i know the feeling too. My old school brava is sitting in the corner with my other bikes surrounding it. I know I wont ride it again and I know some day when someone hands me the cash I will have mixed feelings in my heart. I think we all share in the same feelings as you do. But one thing is for sure, no one can take away the memories you made with your bike.

Is it possible to feel this way about a $69.00 Sears bike that's not even yours but your wife's even though she now has a new 2004 Specialized Sirrus?

LOL. Sure, but first you have to make the memories in order to feel that way towards the bike... and I bet if you ask your wife real nice she will let you have the sears bike :D

Most of my memories are of her saying "this doesn't shift right" and me breaking the front der. and taking it to the LBS to have them replace it as well as the friction shifters she never could figure out with SRAM grip shifters. It still didn't shift that well, even though they put a Deore front der. on it and I spent about $80 for parts and labor.

After I spent more than the bike cost, I thought that a new bike was in order for her.

Skareb,

This is a great soulution to the Apt. storage problem. You don't have to get rid of your long time companion.

Arsbars you cross posting ho! *big grin*

I generally don't get attached to my bikes. My own Thylacines I do, for sure, but I'm not sure whether thats because of their potential historic value at some point ( hahah, sure ) or just that fact that I get more attached to my current bikes because they're not just bought objects.

Last year I sold a Mantis pro Floater, a Sycip cross bike; and my Spot singlespeed is looking like it's next.

I do have a friend that has only been riding for 3 years, and about a year ago she bought her second bike. I told her "Sell that other bike, you'll never ride it again", but she's like "But I love that bike, its my first bike since childhood." If I had that mentality, I'd have to add an extension to my house just for the bikes - bikes I'd never ride, or maybe ride once a year just to remind myself why the newer bikes are so much better. To top it off, this first bike of hers is just a ****box Trek! Now if it was a Nasegawa or something, I'd say "Sure, keep it", but it's a TREK fercryinoutloud!
