As far as I know, yes. You'll run into problems when mixing Shimano and SRAM shifters and derailleurs, though.

Yes, just fine.
Shimano shifters don't work with SRAM derailleurs.
Some SRAM shifters work (by design) with Shimano derailleurs.

Yes. I am running a Sram 9 speed cassette worth my XTR and formerly a XT derailer with XT shifters.

SRAM cassette and Shimano derailleur work together, same spacing. Several manufacturers offer bikes setup like this.
