Hello All,
I currently have a 2001 Trek 820. Am looking to upgrade a little bit. I live in Central Florida, so there are no mountians to climb. I am looking for a bike I can run on the road for 10-15 miles at a time, but still be able to get on some trails.
I have been looking at the Rockhopper and the Hardrock. Can't seem to figure out the difference between these two models. I realize each model is configured differently, but which is better for me?
I have also been looking at the Trek 4300 and 4500.
I am 45 years old and although quite active, I can't see myself conquering some great mountian in the near furture.
I just want to have some fun on the trails and comfortable on the road.

This is a great site, and have spent many hours on it.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Rockhopper is slightly more cross-country oriented, and lighter.

I think it'd be the better buy out of the two, for you.

I'd go with the Rockhopper as well...Pretty good package for a recreational MTB.

Hey fruitguy, don't believe the misconception that there are no decent trails in FL. I'm over in Sarasota and regularly ride trails in Ocala, Lakeland and Tampa area. As a matter of fact, I just destroyed a front wheel going down a hairy descent. PM me and I'll give you some links to some good trails.

BTW, I'd choose the Specialized over the Trek!

I'm 64, active also and live in N. Florida. We don't have the trails like they do in Ocala, but we do have some nice ones up here. I go to N Georgia/ N. Carolina and Tennessee often and ride some great mountain trails. There's nothing more fun than that. I'd suggest the Specialized Stumpjumper. Nothing beats a full suspension even on our N Florida roots and it keeps the rear wheel on the ground for those rough, steep mountain climbs. I decided this year that I was too old for hard tail abuse.
