View Full Version : Front rack for Big Dummy?

Now I'm obsessing about what front rack, since I carried my wife and son on dummy today and (non-human) cargo capacity was thus limited

Rivendell is out of stock on the the Nitto Big Front Rack, or I probably would have already bought it. Probably that's a good thing, since I have no idea what it's rated capacity is, and I had to look around (read: obsess) about alternatives. Maybe I should call and find out the rated cap. if any, and the E.T.A. for being in-stock again. $145, see it here:

JANDD makes the Extreme Front Rack, $73 see it here:

I love the JANDD rear rack I put on my old Schwinn Sports Tourer commuter 10 years ago or more, but for this front they say weight limit 25 lbs? Hardly seems worth the trouble

SURLY makes the Front Nice Rack, but I don't quite get how those fiddly brackets are supposed to work on the Big Dummy fork. Did I miss a write up somewhere? about $135 (maybe less somewheres), 70 lb cap

Old Man Mountain makes something that's known to work, but I don't want to use something that mounts to the QR spindle. Specially since I'm still using a nutted hub. Can I mount that thing up using the dummy's fork eyelets? If so, I'll take another look.

Anyway, I'm strongly leaning to the CETMA 5-rail. $100, http://www.cetmaracks.com/5rail.htm
Even though I don't like the way it'll clamp to my handlebars, and even though I don't really want to attach it via the axle, especially because of using disc brakes. I guess I can use some nice serrated axle washers between the CETMA stay and the fork if I have to; but I'm thinking I can customize the mounting with my drill press and and some flat or angle stock to use the dummy fork eyelets. Maybe even use the fork crown hole and skip clamping to the H-bar (did I mention, I'm not looking forward to clamping onto the Titec H-bar). I really like that it's made in US by someone who's built a livelihood around it. Plus, if it really doesn't work on Dummy, I won't be unhappy having bought it, and I've certainly got other bikes on which to mount it.

Can I get your thoughts please? If you've already jumped this hurdle, could you point me at the posting if I've missed it, or fill me in otherwise? Or if you want to weigh in on one of my alternatives, listed here or not, that would be great

thanks,
Joel

You can attach an Old Man Mountain rack to your fork eyelets using some long bolts. It will be secure and won't mess with whatever setup you plan for your front hub.

I own a Surly Nice front rack - it's way over built and uber heavy. Right now it's sitting in my parts bin. I own two OMM Cold Springs front racks which are both in use [on my LHT & Big Dummy]. The OMM racks are strong, light and stiff. I've put mine through a lot of abuse and had zero issues. OMM racks are hand made in the US if that matters to you and the look quite nice.

I've also got two rear OMM racks that are in use and performing equally well.

I have the extreme rack on my big dummy. It will hold way more than 25 pounds. The fit on the big dummy fork isn't perfect, however, and requires a bit of rack stretching/bending.

Old Man Mountain Cold Springs front rack on the Goat. Agree with Vik as to why.

You could also try the Flatbead rack from Paul Components.
