Cyclocross - Crank Bros Mallet Pedals?

I'm getting my first clipless setup and I've found a decent deal on these..

What do you guys think about these? Is it an overkill?

I thought the big platform would be great when biking around town, but it's not a huge necessity. The main reason I want to go clipless is to start racing.

The thing is.. I've read that these are very heavy. Is this a huge problem?

I'm riding a single speed Surly Cross Check and it's already known to be a bit heavy. I just spent some cash on a carbon fork, but it looks I'll gain all that weight again with these pedals. What do you guys think?

nice in the fact they are crank bros. and I have used them for a while, I did not like for around town though because my ankle would kind of role around on the pedal since the clip in part of the pedal sticks up higher than the platform. I liked them for clipping in for climbing and then having a platform to click out and be on for technical stuff. My two cents.

Not a cyclo-cross racer, but somebody whose used Mallets for quite some time ( 4 years if memory serves me ). Of all the Crank Bros pedals, I like these the best.

With the right kind of shoe, riding around un-clipped is quite comfortable for say a mile or two, enough time to run down to the local store or just get out and stretch.

I ride a Mallet on my mountain bike. I chose to put Acids on my cyclo-cross bike as it's more of a roadie bike for a big guy.

The mallets are an excellent platform/clipless combo. The 2008 versions (with the pins) have excellent traction without cleats.

For racing, can't beat bare eggbeaters. Mallets are overkill for sure, but it depends how big you prioritize racing versus other uses of the bike.
