The article claims it's 2000 lumens, but eats 20 batteries. Might be nice to see a real report on this:

For $7,000 I would expect a lot more than 2,000 lumens and 1.5 hr runtime.

The article gets several things wrong:
The Beast 2 is actually a HID torch, with dual modes, high brightness with HID and lower brightness with a ring of LED's embedded in the reflector.
It also has an optional rechargeable pack.

And an interesting tidbit: the designer has such faith in the robustness of the build that he has been seen throwing the light into the air and letting it bounce on the ground, as well as encouraging others to do the same.

Illumination tools. My other hobby.

The light is appropriately named The Beast- a classic light. It brings back fond memories but it doesn’t hook to my helmet well. Impressive looking and honest specs but heavy and the performance increases of LEDs are starting to favor emitters. Now I use a light the size of a Mini-Maglite with a 1,120 lumen emitter and 4 levels of brightness. Small, it fits on the bike and will light up a field. Damn cars are starting to annoy me- they flash their lights. Get two of the emitters and you are roaming in The Beast’s territory yet with lightweight equipment. The beam pattern is different (I think better for riding) however still impressive and blinding.

In the minority, I still root for Surefire. I’m sorry that they did the costly research then many companies reverse-engineered their sweat to cheapen it all. The Wal-Mart mentality, monthly new slap-and-patch lights, and the throw-away society is a wasteful but popular view that I don’t agree with.

You can get a polarion ph50 for $2300 with 5200 lumens and an arguably better beam pattern, smaller, more ergonomic carry handle.

I suspect the high cost is partially due to paying for the big name, Surefire.
