Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Fenix L2D Q5 Turbo Mode

So, on reading all of the rave reviews I've purchased a Fenix L2D Q5 flashlight. I've just read the instructions which states turbo mode should not be used more than 10 minutes:notamused:

What mode have you folks been running your L2D lights continuous on? Or do you ignore the warning and run it on turbo mode anyway?

I also just purchased one and received it a couple days ago. I thought one of the reviews or forum postings (either here or maybe over on candlepower forums) said that riding created enough air cooling that heat buildup wasn't an issue.

You can safely ignore that warning.

Many have had the OPPOSITE problem in cold-weather climes, in that the light is so efficient that it doesn't heat up the batts enough in near-freezing temps so that if you've got batts that are temp-sensitive, you may get decreased runtime due to the coldness!

You can run on turbo 2hrs+ without problems. I use it running, with little airflow, and it's fine.

Mine never gets warm until I'm in the garage at the end of a ride and I've left the light on.

So today was the first day I used my new L2D. Only on flash mode (it was a little gray out) so no warmth. But somehow when I put it in my commute bag after my morning commute I must have pressed the switch so it was back on in full Turbo mode, in a small zippered compartment where I keep all my blinkies and patch kit etc.

Luckily I just couldn't help taking a look at the light to see how bright it was in my office, when I discovered the above situation. It had only been about 15 minutes but the entire light was HOT HOT HOT including the outside which was almost too hot to hold. A few minutes on top of the air conditioner brought it back down to normal temp.

So my lessons learned: Do not leave on in Turbo mode in enclosed spaces. Do not put back in messenger bag except in the holster with the clicky switch protected.

Worst-case scenario would have been if I hadn't gone to look at the light and it either (a) ran down completely or died from the heat (b) melted my nylon messenger bag (c) caught the office on fire.

... One way to avoid this is before packing it away, twist the head of the flashlight back to the low-med-high-SOS mode so it could not go into turbo-strobe mode.

Worst-case scenario would have been . . . (c) caught the office on fire.

But then the story would have made a great Southwest Airlines "Want to Get Away?" commercial.

(For those of you in cities where Southwest Airlines doesn't run commercials, sorry for the obscure reference...but I'm sure you can see one on YouTube if you simply must know what I'm talking about.) ;)
