Headed up to Lake Tahoe next weekend, was wondering if anybody could recommend a good shop for bike rentals? It would be great if we could find a tandem.

Not bringing the Birdy...haven't figured out how to fit it on the Duc yet. :p

I assume you mean Road Bikes? Tahoe Bicycles (I think that's the name) on US-50 in South Lake is the only place I know that rents Road bikes, they have a pretty good stable but I don't think any tandems. For MTB or Hybrids there are numerous places.

I think the only type of road bike I could get the bf on would be a tandem (with me as captain), as he is not a very experienced cyclist. So if we can't get one, it will be hybrids or MTB.

If you don't like pedalling, you can rent bikes at Northstar, haul them up the mountain on the gondola, and then coast down. Last time I did this, full day passes were $25, but that was years ago. Some of the downhill trails are very tame. Others recommend body armor.

I went by Tahoe Bicycles on Sunday. I seem to remember there being a pretty wide selection of bikes available there, and there might have been tandems. I was just passing by, and a large lot full of bicycles caught my eye.

I was just in Tahoe City (north shore) last week w/ my Gf and her friend from collage. They rented bikes at Porters by the bridge at hwy 89 and 28. They have comfort mtn bikes with adjustable stems.

There are two paved bike trails. One follows the truckee river and goes as far as the squaw valley turn off. It's a real easy mellow ride but the trail can get crowded. There is also the trail heading down the west shore of the lake. We had a very "non cycling" group and it was no problem for any of them. It's pretty flat.

Olympic bikes up the road from there rents tandems. Here's their site:

As for the riding itself, I try to avoid the Truckee River trail during summer weekends. It's a zoo.

I LOVE THAT TRAIL!! But I'm not watching the road.. I'm watching the party rafts floating by :)

Msincredible: I noticed that there is a Saturday afternoon road group ride at Northstar. 5 to 7pm. It does 2 loops of the Tour de Nez circuit.

yeah, I could see that to be true. We rode it on Wednesday and got started at about 10:00. It wasn't too bad but coming back it started getting way more crowded then when we started. We then rode the west shore trail down hwy 89 to sunnyside. Couldn't get a seat at the outside bar:(

That trail goes pretty far down the lake but I am not sure how far.

From the river trail you can see all the lazy river rafting, looks like fun. even a keg in an inner tube.
