Omfg. I got stung by something BIG (I never actually saw it, but I sure felt it) on the ride home. It hit me right in the lip. :notamused: Luckily, I was only about a mile from home. I rode most of that mile with my left hand over my mouth. I couldn't believe how bad it hurt for the first five minutes or so. Then it almost didn't hurt at all, but my mouth swelled up pretty big. Now (a little over an hour later) it hurts again, but the gin and tonics have taken the edge off :o
My boyfriend was freaking out because he's allergic to stingy insects, but I'm okay. I'm just a little superstitious because the last time I got stung (August 23, 2000) was a couple hours before I found out my grandparents had died in a car accident

I felt your pain about two months ago. They say baking soda or Adolph's Meat Tenderizer is good for stings. But I don't think it helped me any. Benedryl would help the swelling.

A couple of months ago, a wasp flew down my shirt and stung me in the chest four times before I was able to kill that little *******. It wasn't a serious health risk, but a car full of college kids seemed to enjoy watching me throw my bike aside and and frantically start ripping my clothes off at a four-way stop.

I almost got stung by a bee today. I think it sensed the propel mix in my drink and was going after that. I just stayed still and threw the bottle and the lil' bugger went away. A+++++ story.

 Funny post of the day. It would be better if it were in a WalMart though

 ...been there, done that. Then I had to go to school the next day. :bang:

The doc gave me something for the swelling but the only real thing that worked was time :(

Oh yeah. That's why I stopped coming here. Thanks for reminding me! :thumb:

To everybody else:
Thanks. :)
I always liked coming here to read people's commute stories. I'll try to come back more as a listener.

Normally I cruise here to decide which socks to wear on a Monday.

I got stung last week on the inside of my left calf. It was very large and I thought it had bounced off without stinging me. No such luck. Benadryl and an ice pack worked wonders, although the itching took almost a week to subside.

I got stung on the back of my thigh while jogging two weeks ago. I only caught the insect fleetingly as it flew away, so I don't know what it is.

It hurt for 5 minutes, and itched for a week.

Yeah, I've gotten yellow jackets down my shirt at least once every year I've been riding but none this year. I'm wondering when they're going to hit.

They don't bother me too much. I get a little red about the size of a dime for about 2 hours, no swelling, then it's gone. Once I know they're in there, I just stop and pull the shirt up to let them go.

I've cured my kids of being scared of almost everything; they'll both cheerfully pick up snakes and play with spiders, but the younger one still stays away from bees; he got stung a few times when he was about 5 and hasn't gotten over it yet. I got whacked a half dozen times at that age too and it did take me a few years to get over it. I pull weeds in the garden right in the middle of a sage bush with 40 or 50 bees on it, and they never bother me, because I don't freak out and bother them. They sting when they get in my shirt because they're getting squished and covered with sweat.

I was doing about 30 mph downhill trying to make a 90 degree right turn in the bottom of it when a large bumble bee powered its way in and then out of my left sleeve & bit me couple of times while in there. I still remember that the light darkened in my eyes & only the fear of going down & even more acute pain enabled me to make that curve. It was quite a scary experience.

I carry a small pill kit with aleve, dayquil and anti-histemines.

I am allergic to honey bees.
Things to do when you are stung by an insect (and you do not know what kind of insect it is):
Lower your heart rate. Easier said than done when you are out in the boonies. But if you are in a populated place, lock up, get into a public place and rest.
Take fluids.
Take an anti-histamine if you start seeing/feeling serious effects from the sting.

If you want more exact instructions on this, consult a doctor, yada yada yada.

Wow, I am going to start wearing a long coat and a hockey mask for the commute! This should fix all the problems.
