1/29/04: CORRECTION - rear hub had a shimano 9 speed cassette, not 8 as noted. Not sure if it makes a difference; please consult a bike expert or if there's a way to measure it, please contact me. Apologies for mix-up.

depends on what you want, the latter of the two loos to be older, but its all mavic parts. I would go for the Ultegra rims because they have tires.
happy bidding

i am looking for the highest quality between the two with weight being a key factor. I already have tires. From the descriptions i cant distinguish which ones would be in better condition the Ultegra is flashier and more likely to be a target for thieves. Which ones would be lighter?

Flashy? theives? umm, if you want the best you may want to stay off of ebay. Lighter, I do not know.
all else fails, have your local shop make a pair for you.

Deore XT is m mountain group, so I'm not sure what the first one is talking about. Also. what is a KAZ rim? The second is a good deal if cheap enough. Check Colo Cyclist to get the price new. Is the 1st one 8/9 speed? It could be 7.

Deore XT is a mountain bike setup.
I have a rear Mavic Open Pro 32 spoke setup that I have 14,000 miles on and I had one spoke come loose in all that time. Ultegra hub, they are bulletproof.

I would go with the Mavic Open Pro clincher. They are great rims with solid hubs. They should last you many miles without much upkeep. If you get better or wish to upgrade to a lighter set later, these will be great for training.
Mavic OP gets my vote also. Unless they've changed in the last 10 years, the old ISO 3 rims had no eyelets under the spoke nipples...common failure mode was for the nipple to pull through the rim. Mavic is a higher quality and stronger rim, IMO.
Concerning the seller, if he doesn't know how to tell the difference between an 8 and 9 sp cassette, somethings up. Any bike rider replacing wheelsets would know the difference....so, where did he get the wheels?
12-27 is an XT cogset. Slides right on a road hub. I'm sure that is what he means. I've got a ton of miles on an Open Pro laced to an Ultregra hub. With a good build it will last forever. Not the lightest but light enough.

I won the bid for both wheelsets  so i guess i'll get to make a real informed decision when I own both sets
I think i will keep the mavics and re-sell the shimano ultegras on ebay. Hopefully, I will get at least what I paid for. The shimanos cost $105 US including tires. so i think i should be able to get that back plus shipping. Unless anyone has any other ideas. I dont want to get negative feedback or screw the seller.
How durable are the ceramic rims? If i go over a curb am I going to wreck them?
Thanks again!
