Commuting - What rage of temps do you commute in throughout the year?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was just wondering what kinds of temperatures everybody faces on their commute.

In Las Vegas the summers can peak at 120+ degrees.

I have survived my first summer commuting out here, but now I'm starting to dwell on the upcoming winter.:o

We can reach freezing temps in the dead of winter. And we're in the desert and we get some killer winds. In the winter those cold winds cut through like a knife.

So what temps do you brave?

About 36-94. It often gets hotter, but I really don't want to ride in it. Actually I have trouble with cold as well.

In two+ years temps have ranged from 99°F to -6°F (without wind chill factor). I have a rather short commute (~4.5 miles one way).

It's between 30 and 50 F in the mornings when I leave, and between 70 and 90 when I leave work... pretty much year round. It rains maybe five days a year. We pay for it to be like that.

Upper 90s on the high end, and I call it quits if it hits single digits. So far I haven't called it off due to cold. 14 degrees once, though.

Almost always between 65-75F. I don't do the return trip until well after sunset.

5-90F+, though my commute is mighty short.
Thankfully 90F+ days are few and usually far between.
I use goggles when it's below 20F and longjohns plus goretex or windblocker pants/coat/hat and insulated boots for the below 15F days.
Watch out for ice when it's below freezing - remember you can have puddles in the sun and ice in the shadows. If you lived in a colder climate, I would recommend studded tires, such as Schwalbe Winters.
Keep an eye on the forecast and dress appropriately; you'll be fine; you might even work up a sweat.
Check out the winter cycling forum, too.

however cold it gets around here (15 deg maybe?) up to whatever it's been the last couple of days, somewhere between 105 and 110. 100 is about my limit, and i'm definitely done with commuting this summer until the late afternoon heat slacks off. (i only rode to work twice last week, and none since then except early morning groceries and late afternoon movie store trips over the weekend.)

yesterday at 6p was over 105, still 99 at 9 pm. i hate it here in the summer.

Before kids: Temperatures? What do I care?

With kids: If it's going to be above 85° on the return trip, we don't do the outbound trip on a bike. Subway time.

I'm not sure what the low-temperature limit with kids is yet. Probably somewhere in the low 50s.

And I no longer ride in significant rain.

I imagine the best place in the nation (world?) to commute by bike is San Diego. I don't live there anymore (Atlanta now), but that's where I grew up. We had bike lanes on almost every road, and some were separated by a curb-like line of concrete. Bike riders are all over the place there (along with flung-open car doors on the side).

Right along the coast the typical summer high (which only lasts about an hour or two) is 80, and the typical low around 60. In the winter the typical high is about 65-70, and the typical low about 55-60.

Perfect riding weather.

~25 F - ~105 F

We've had a long stretch of 90-something weather lately. I find myself hoping for rain on the way home :).

Commuting for the past year-and-a-half. Temp range (w/o wind chill) 10F-100F/-12C-38C. I could easily go a good deal colder--not very interested in going much warmer (mid-Atlantic humidity sucks).

My highest temperature bike commuting was 104F, and lowest was 18F over the past year or so. The 104 was much worse than the 18. You can dress for the cold temps, within reason, but you can only take off so many clothes when it gets really hot. Plus the temperatures on a large, busy street at 5 pm in the afternoon are actually much hotter than the official high temps.

Hot, no problem generally on my short commute. 20 degrees with wind and I have to wear too much to make it fun. When I used to train, 26 was the set point. I'd have to put on an extra layer and the fun dropped out!

North of Atlanta we see mid 20'sf on the low end (very very rarely lower) and we tickle 100f a couple weeks a year. The bonus is we have suck humidity of 50% or better most of the year. Morning in the summers we see 90%. This yea has been an unusually mild summer for us. Actually been quite pleasant compared to a couple years ago.

Low is 5F. High 105F.

This next winter I intend to pick up some more gear and see if I can make it even lower.

Now.... Vegas has a winter?

Thts soo cold.

Here in Perth it doesn't so much get cold, coldest would be about 0 Celsius in the winter.
But in the summer it can reach up to 45 Celsius.

Extremes that I've experienced are -25*F in winter, about 108*F in summer.

When it gets below 32,I put on studded tires. Below about 10, I switch to platforms and wear insulated hunting boots. When it gets over about 80, I start actually carrying water. My ride is 11 miles normally (12.5 now with construction detours)

Southern Cal daily commute temps this year have been very mild. Lowest temp at 6:30 am departure was around 39F/4C. I've had less than 10 days so far this year where the afternoon temp at 5 pm on my way home was above 90F/32C.

Low: 4 degrees F.

High: upper 90's

I'm willing to go colder and hotter. I prefer cold to the heat. I'd much rather ride when it's 4 degrees out than when it's 97 and humid.

-5 to 100 farenheit. That's a normal variation over the course of a year. Last year I bottomed out at 10, this year I'll be set for much lower temperatures. I just didn't have equipment for low temperatures last winter.

Summer - 50's to mid 80's.
Winter - 30's to 50's.

Other half, rain.

I live in San Diego where there are no seasons. The temp can be anywhere from 60 F at night in the winter all the way up to 80 F in the summer during the middle of the day. :)

-25C (-13f) is the coldest I've ridden in. I thought my tyres where going to shatter.

It was 30C (86f) the other day. It felt like I was riding in other peoples tram lines in the melted tar.

Coldest about 7C (45F), hottest about 35C (100F).

It's been a cold winter this year, with many days below 10C. Brrrr. I even had to invest in leg and arm warmers, as just knicks and a short sleeved jersey was a bit chilly!

OP, you've got me beat. The low is somewhere in the high 40's-low 50's (farenheit). The high is in the 100+ teens. I skip most of the highs, since I'm a teacher and don't have to commute in the summer. I ride at night when it's cooler (slightly over 100), instead.

Jim from Boston

Here in Boston, I've ridden to as low as -3 F on a 14 mile commute, though the usual winter temps are in the 20's. I don't do rain or sleet or anything drenching, no matter what the temperature. High end temps are in the 90's for longer distances.

We have a cable channel that broadcasts continuous temperature and Doppler readings covering my route with frequent wind, humidity, etc readings, about every minute. I don't pay attention to wind chill readings though, since wind chill is so inevitable on a bike, and I dress according to the temperature readings only. In my mind I have a dress rating system of 1 to 6, from summer to winter wear. (I got this idea from the rating scale for white water rafting). With some bicycling macho I tell non-cyclists, "Wind chill readings are for wimps." ;-)

we've had 40-something days over 100 this year so far.

It's not too bad, except at stop lights.

It'll get down in the high 20's once in a while.
