Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Jersey Sizes

Hey Everyone,

I want to buy a jersey, so I went to the store the other day to try them on. I normally wear an XL so I grabbed one off the rack and went to the fitting room to try it on. Wow, I felt like I was stuffing a bratwurst into a hotdog casing. Not Good! Apparently these sizes run kinda small. I am 5'11" and weigh 255lbs so I am not about to wear a sausage casing on rides, so what do you guys do? Should I be buying a 3xl or what? None of the shops I've been in have the larger sizes so I can only order it online. I want one that fits loosely even though I know most people don't wear them that way. Any other types of shirts or jerseys you guys wear?

I've found that cycling clothes in general run small. You may want to try a mountain bike jersey. They're looser fitting and most still have a zippered pocket on the back. You can find normal road jerseys in your size but with the bright colors they come in aren't all that flattering. I have an electric blue road jersey that I only wear when I ride at nights because it makes me look like a giant blueberry.

I recently purchased a Primal Wear (http://www.primalwear.com/) jersey. I ordered the first one from Performance, who had completely inaccurate sizing information. Once I found the Primal site, with correct sizing information, I ordered an XL which fits perfectly and looks great! My jersey fits close, but isn't skin-tight. I liked it so much, I immediately ordered another one...Highly recommended!

My only complaint is that their outlet site (http://www.primal-sports.com/) has prices that are identical to their normal site. It does have a couple of jerseys not available on the main site, but you've still gotta pay full-price for them. Their prices aren't cheap to begin with, but based on what I've seen the designs and quality are a cut above stuff in the $40-50 range.

It really varies by manufacturer. I have anywhere from 2XL to a L. In general, they run on the small size. Note, I am 5-11, 193 right now.

Another option is the generic Starter branded sports clothing at Wally World. They are on the looser side.

In Performance branded gear, I would expect you to be around a 3XL.

According to the salesman I was recently talking to, most jerseys are "race cut" which means an XL will fit someone who is 6'6" and skinny as a rail. He then showed me some which were a little fuller cut and I found a particular Pearl Izumi that fit perfectly. This was after my wife bought me a really wild one that I loved, but couldn't come close to fitting into.

I normally wear an XL as well (5'11" 230lb), and I just picked up a couple of general sport jerseys at Kohl's. They're both made from the same type of wicking material as the cycle jerseys, and they run pretty true to size. The XL in both brands fit with a touch of extra room. the only thing missing is the zipper pocket in the back, and the zipper for the collar. One is Tek Gear, and the other is a Russell. They run $12 to $15 on sale.

This has been my experience as well. "Club cut" is usually what you want if you don't have a peloton-perfect physique, though there is quite a bit of variation from one brand to another as to how snug they fit.

I like the russle one's. I picked some up at Mervyn's, on clearance, for about $7.. Sizes run true, I actually think I could have gotten away with a large, but an XL is nice. 3 months ago I wore 2XL shirts, so it's nice. The price tag was right, I may have to go get a couple more of them, since I'm riding to work everyday now. :)

I would normally wear an XL, at 6", 185#. The size I settled on was L, which is between loose and tight. Doesn't cling at all, but sure fits nice.But, I picked up several of the Starter brand "DriStar" jerseys at Wally World for $6 a shirt, couple days ago, off their clearance rack. A whole bunch of colors, and I bought a pile.

were they jersey's or the wicking t-shirts? I havn't been over to that part of the store in a bit....

Sleeveless shirts. In the men's wear, active wear.

This has been going on for ages.
Apparently all cyclists are under 155 pounds.
If I go thru Colorado Cyclists catalog I either need a tall glass of blackberry merlot or something to stop the fits of laughter.
I take a 52/54 size jersey.
40-42 shorts do NOT fit when ones waist IS 42.
That all said: You need to go to NRS paddlewear to understand we clyde cyclists arn't the only members of a sport which believes "everyone who does this is thin"
I ordered a pair of hydroskin shorts and..God, a Shoehorn ,and a bucket of lard could not have gotten me into those size 42s!

Oddly enough, my Aerotech jersey, which I love but for the fact that I have to keep performing the Picard Maneuver, is marked 1XL, when I know it has to be at least a 3XL and is probably a 4XL. My 4X women's shorts fit fine, but I can't even think about squeezing into the "4XL" leggings.
