I have a friend who's about 55km away, and to get there it's impractical to not ride on the highway (27, to be specific.)

Checking "Avoid Highways" in Google Maps will tell me to ride 27, Mapquest would have me on 7, 27 and 50.

Two things: I heard some time ago that highway riding's illegal for cyclists, and the local trail map references 400-series highways as "major barriers" - Is there a difference, legally, between 400-series and non-400 highways, or is it legal to ride on any highway?

You may not ride on the 400 series highways in Ontario. But if you are experienced with 80 kmh+ traffic, you will have no problem riding on the other highways and county roads. The day of the week and time of day can make a huge difference in traffic volume, so beware! Where we live, in rural Ontario, I would never ride on a Friday afternoon or a Sunday evening! Choose your route carefully; some roads have good shoulders, others are pretty awful. (Broken pavement and pot holes) You are entitled to your lane, but as a slower moving vehicle, you must yield to faster moving traffic and ride to the right, but never jeopardize your own safety. Be visible, wear a helmet and assert yourself. Ride defensively and assume that no one can see you.
