I bought a pair of Time ATAC Carbons for mountain biking way back in '95 and a few years ago I recently bought another 2 pairs, one for a road commuter bike and another for my MTB commuter. The only difference is the '95 is a ATAC Carbon and the one I bought for my MTB commuter is the cheaper Alium one. I recently bought new MTB shoes since my commuter shoes from '95 are starting to wear. However, the cleat I got with the Alium appears different and has a much harder release (not just because it's new) than my previous ATACs.

Looking at the cleat itself, it appears the newer ATACS or the Aliums have a much wider Hmmmm, Ridge?, I don't know how to describe it, but it's the actual ridge that will hook onto the spring bars. Anyway, my '95 cleat is much narrower than the new one, I'm wondering if there is a difference between the ATAC Carbon cleats and the cheaper Alium ones or is there a difference in the older ('95) cleats and the newer ATAC ones?

I much prefer my older cleats and I'm thinking of taking a dremel to the new ones..
