I heard a Green Bay Packer cheesehead protected a guy from injury during a plane crash once. Can one do the same for me on my bike?

Apparently Jon Murray of Kansas was wondering the same thing. Mr. Murray wrote to Bicycling Magazine's Style Man for his answer. Here's what Mr. Man had to say:

"Sucker is as sucker does. You wanna look like a sucker? Helmets are painful enough, let alone a foam piece of cheese. Make it go away." - Style Man

It's probably not the answer you want, but Style Man is kind of a dick. What did you expect?

Swiss cheese provides good ventilation. Some swear by munster, but it sticks to my hair. Gouda is nice and aerodynamic due to the slick wax coating. Personally, I just sprinkle some romano in my hair and ride away. Other favorites?

I saw a kid in the neighborhood wearing a cheesehead hat as a bicycle helmet. All the cute mothers thought he was darling.

If there was a chance in hell that they would think I was darling too, you can bet I would be wearing a cheesehead.

After some consideration, though, I am still wearing a trad bicycle helmet.

Lightboy,

You ask a stupid question, you get a stupid answer. And yes you're right as to the source, after all I didn't say I did it I just said I heard about it. But can you image being in a pace line and the lead guy blazing a trial is wearing a cheesehead? I've seen just about everything but THAT would take the cake.

Thanks for asking Chris. Since I don't watch sports (football, basketball, golf, etc.) on television, I didn't know what they were talking about either.

In Georgia, one of the best times to ride is during a Georgia football game. There seems to be some unwritten rule that Georgia residents must attend or watch all Georgia football games. Not me. That's when I get out and ride. Everyone is at home in front of the television and not on the roads. :D :D :D

You want me to wear that when I ride? Heck, it's warm enough here with all that fur, I think I'll just stick with my bike helmet thanks.

I've been told the same is true in Green Bay during a Packers game, but I don't know. I'm always watching the game. Gotta have priorities!

I've seen riders with Cheeseheads on some of the rides around here. Usually worn on top of a helmet. They also make a Cheesebutt. The same kind of foam as the Cheesehead, but cut thin and shaped to mode around your butt. Its held in place with straps around your waist and thighs. Designed to keep your butt warm when setting on the cold aluminum seats at the stadium. I wonder if it might also work on long bike rides as well!

I have one of those cheeseheads. Yup, a genuine Packers cheesehead, purchaced in Green Bay from a genuine cheesehead Packer fan.

It's painted purple, with Viking horns and braids.

Of course, it's stayed in the closet a lot this season, but it's still pretty cool. I almost got beat up when I used to wear it in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Ha ha. Silly Packer fans.

It would work even better if you could find a pimpin' bike like Pee Wee's. Man, I've wanted one of those since I was six!

I'm not sure. I did discover in Gympie that vegemite won't keep them away.

Who? Me?

I was merely commenting that I want a bike like Pee Wee Herman's. Have you ever seen that thing? It's awsome!
