I need some advice for fitting. I have a Large Surly KM (20") that I purchased (frame only) and took to a local bike store and had them build it up with parts I had purchased. For the most part it fits OK--SO height is acceptable, reach is ok. The problem I have is that I feel like I am sitting to far backward and that the cranks and pedals are "too far forward." Again the reach is Ok. I am running Mustache bars with a 70 mm race face stem. The seatpost is a Salsa Shaft and has a 23 mm setback (almost an inch). I adjust the seat as far forward as I can and it still feels too far back for the pedal stroke. I feel like I am pedaling just out if front of me and I can slide forward just a little and it feels better. If i went to a Thomson or other zero-offset seatpost would that solve the problem or is there likely some other fitting aspect that I am overlooking? It seems to me that presently I am behind neutral knee position. The length of pedal stroke feels about right, though. This is my first real bike as I have owned just Walmart bikes in the past but they "felt better." All karate monkeys have a 73 degree STA small up to X-large so going to a smaller size wouldnt change the relation of bottom bracket to seat position i dont think. I am trying to prevent making further costly mistakes and correct this problem with minimal trial and error. One symptom I have is knee discomfort after riding. My low back also hurts some but I think that is from the handlebars being too low, as I can flip them and that raises them by approx 120 mm. Back then feels fine but it still feels like pedals are too far forward (I am too far back). The one other thing i can think of is crank length. I am running 170 mm sugino arms. they are about middle of the road I think in length. Thanks for any input you can give.
