Salsa Casseroll vs Surly Steamroller - widest tires?
Sorry if this one has been answered before, couldn't find any info here or elsewhere. Please post a link in that case.
Replacing my now defunct Cannondale CX with a fixed gear, I have basically two alternatives:
If I want to use studded tires in the winter, is there a chance to squeeze in a 40mm wide tire on either of them? I know people have managed to fit 35mm on them, the Casseroll is even fitted with 37mm tires at delivery.

my new beater (frame was a gary fisher something many paintjobs ago) takes 700x42s just fine 
why would you be looking at the steamroller instead of the crosscheck? what is going to ultimately limit your tire size is the fact that both the casseroll and the steamroller rely on caliper brakes instead of canti's (unless you are going to do without brakes? which i SERIOUSLY don't recommend if you are looking at this because you want to fit large studded tires for riding on ice and snow) the crosscheck will fit up to 45's the steamroller fits 38s and the casseroll fits 35s

The Steamroller can actually fit tires larger than 38; it says on Surly's website the limit is 38 if you're looking for fender clearance, though I don't know how much larger you can go.

After finding a SE Lager in a LBS I decided to go for that option. Biking in snow/ice, I will use the old CX with studded tires, the frame was not so badly as I thought.
